I forgot to renew my sticker 3/10 and I did not find a renewal in my mail. Any suggestions as the easiest way to get my sticker? Im thinking about getting it on http://www.tax.co.harris.tx.us/ But it says if my sticker is expired I cant and will be subject to $4k fine??? Do I need to go to the court house? What do I need to bring?
Just bring your insurance card. That's it. They will ask you if received a ticket. If not, no worries.
can i still go to Krogers? or order online etc? I dont want to stand in that government office line if at all possible.
You can go to the Tax assessors office. I went to the one in Pasadena and got my registration sticker there.
The line in Pasadena is MAYBE a ten minute wait, at most. Not sure about other areas around Houston. Once it's past the due date you can only go that route and not at Krogers, etc.
I believe it depends on whether they still have them available. I went to the HWY6 and CLAY Fiesta and they said "We're all out", not "we don't sell them after expired." Don't know if that's a law or a rule.
Grocery stores and other non-governmental sites are able to provide the registration only up to one month past expiration.
I recently had to get my registration renewed about six months past its expiration. I went to the downtown courthouse -- it was fantastic, and I highly recommend it. I've had to do this a few times, and it's always taken 25 to 30 minutes at the courthouse on Clay road. Downtown, I was done in like 8 minutes.
I work at the tax office. You only have 5 business days grace period to buy it online or at the stores. Once you pass that then you either have the option to mail it in with the expired registration affidavit form(MV-469A) downloadable at hctax.net, renewal notice, insurance and payment. Otherwise you can come into any of the 16 offices with your id, insurance and write down the license plate # unless you have the renewal notice with you. If you're not the registered owner then you need to have the Authorization letter(MV-454) and a copy of the owner's driver's license. The fee will be the same unless you got a ticket for driving with expired registration and be charged a 20% penalty. You can only pay with cash, check or money order, no credit cards.
Strange... it's always taken me much longer downtown than it does at Clay Road. I had to do this about a week ago and Clay Road had me in and out in about 10 minutes, whereas downtown took me closer to 45.
I JUST had to do this a few weeks ago. My tag expired in October of last year, so I was unable to renew it at a grocery store. What I did was mail the original bill they sent me, along with a check to the Tax Assesor's office. I also had to print and sign a form stating that I had not driven the car since the registration expired. I sent all of this to them and a few weeks later they sent me the new sticker. If you're in Harris County then it needs to go to Leo Vasquez's office. Look up their info and/or call them for more details.
sort of related, but has anyone renewed a texas drivers license recently. are they now requiring a lot more documents for the Real ID thing (i.e. birth certificates, etc ). And if so how long did it take of physically being there. Here in Nevada I went about 1 month ago and had to wait 4.5 hours - it was terrible....
