We already signed him to a non-guaranteed minimum deal for next year, so there's not going to be any kind of trade filler shenanigans (not that it's even possible for a number of reasons). All this does is set up for Alexander for our off-season program and summer league team. He'll get to work with the coaching staff and practice with the other guys who stick around during the summer.

Okay, it doesn't actually say it's a minimum contract but it's pretty much a given. It's the same deal that James White got last year.

If it was all about trade filler, we would have just kept Hilton Armstrong.

So, what part do you have a problem with. Love Yao as a person, but your first quote is definitely possible. He may not be the same player as he was when he left. I hope #2 isn't correct, but it's certainly possible that the team defense doesn't recover to top-of-the-league form when Yao returns and we may need a defensive coach like Tom Thibodeaux was to Jeff Van Gundy. I actually don't agree that Yao wouldn't choose Rick Adelman as his coach though.

All of what you quoted actually could come to pass. I don't want it to, but it's a possibility. The thought of trading Yao is a bit idiotic at this point, because that's not even on the Rockets' radar right now. Which may his point now that I think about it, but regardless it's not happening.

    1) anybody at the end of the bench is liable to be used as trade filler, when the need arises. In any given deal, the numbers they have to come up with will be between $A and $B, so they figure out who can make those numbers.
    2) Why make the move now? Because, this gives them a few games, plus summer league, to see if he's any good. They knew they didn't have any basketball interest in Armstrong.
    3) He's a little cheaper than Armstrong, certainly.

Not surprised by the action but the timing is weird. A 7 footer who couldn't break the rotation of a team needing a 7 footer. He showed more energy on the bench celebrating plays than he did on the court...

Isn't Mike Harris still on the roster (for now)...

A pre-emptive strike to pick up Johnson before someone else does?

It's not possible. The Rockets are over the cap and (I think) have fully used their MLE. All they can offer is the minimum. Plus, you can't sign someone to a deal with a 800% raise in the next season. It just doesn't work that way.

THIS was the one reason why I would have been hesitant to have waived Hilton Armstrong. Because of his current $2.8M salary, the Rockets could have used him as salary filler in a sign-and-trade deal this summer. He could be signed for up to $3.36M without incurring any Base Year Compensation issues. Given his scrub status, my guess is that Hilton would jump at the chance to make a guaranteed $3M+ just to be included in a trade.

But, alas, that option has now been foreclosed to the Rockets.

But my guess is that Alexander Johnson is viewed as a better basketball player at this point. He will either be summer league and training camp fodder (at worst), possibly very minor salary filler, or possibly a guy to fill out the roster if several players are traded out this summer.

There are a lot of really great guys in the world, just not all of them are talented enough to play professional basketball. Hilton is one of those people.
