Like I said earlier... I'm going to wait till the next generation before I even consider buying, and if something comes out before then that I like better, I'll get that. I'm not committed to the iPad yet, but I do see the use of it, and I do see a lot of success for Apple with the device as well. I can say iPad over soon-to-be-released tablet computers right now because those tablet computers are still not in the market, and it is unknown as to what type of user experience they will provide. The only limitation I'm concerned about at this point is multitasking. It is heavily rumored that some form of multitasking will be introduced in the next iPhone OS, so that issue might be resolved fairly quickly. (And multitasking is possible if you jailbreak, which my iPhone is) Flash is something I'd like to see as well, but it isn't crucial. Apple might come around and do something on that end as well. I'm completely content on waiting for now.
If you think a netbook and an iPad are a similar device, then I'd refer you back to the whole "you need to spend more time with one" post I made. Like I said already, the iPad target market is not people who need all the functionality of a laptop. MacBook = 999. iPad = 499. So, not sure what your point is there. If you're looking to get the most tricked out iPad, then you're obviously closer to needing a MacBook, but maybe you fall into that target market who doesn't need laptop functionality, yet still wants that snazzy Apple user-friendly media experience? (the user experience of an iPad and a MacBook are pretty different, fyi) I think you need to spend some quality time with an iPad, it might answer a lot more of your questions than I can. It seems to me like you think the iPad is basically a novelty laptop or something. I'd say that is incorrect.
That's the thing... Nobody has to tell you why you should value it more. You assign your own value to it and make your decision. Why are people so interested in understanding each individuals behavior towards consumption? The people that can justify it will get it and those who can't, won't. It works for some people, but not all. That's true of any damn thing you can buy in the world
I can see where you are coming from on the macbook and the iphone. The macbook does essentially everything my pc laptop does so if you want to pay the premium because you perfer the OS X then i get it. The IPhone was one of a kind when it came out and until recently could not be out matched. But with android allowing multitasking i think the iphone will match it and i can once again understand paying a premium for a product that does the same thing with a different OS. I dont agree on the "Pad" product because there are major differences with the capabilites on these two products. The only thing the ipad has is that it is out now. They expect the Slate in June i emphasize the word expect. It just seems that with the "Pad" product the premium you are willing to pay is more of a limitation.
I'll tell you why I have one... I want an e-reader. I'd prefer to roam the Internet with the iPad in my lap rather than a 5+ lb laptop as I'm lounging on the couch. I travel a lot, so watching shows and movies on a 9+ inch screen is beautiful. It's easy to use, I like the screen, and it looks pimp. Sure, other companies may come out with better products, but there isn't much that they could offer that would make it worthwhile for me to wait and see.
Maybe people don't want Windows for a "pad" device. If people love the app store, love the ipod, it's simpleness, and they love all that the iPad has to offer... why go away from it? Even if something has better specs or something better to offer, if you like what Apple has to offer... you're going to buy it.
Yeah I misunderstood. I read it as you implying that there were not people like that. I pretty much agree with you.
This. Apple has really just shot the lights out by making all of their big hitting applications and store services work seamlessly across all of their hardware platforms. People are loyal to Apple because of the user experience of their smaller devices and services, like the iPod and iTunes... now those seeds are bearing fruit as consumers are falling in love with this new hardware.
As an NPR interviewee articulated last week, the IPad/IPhone web experience is akin to an online gated community. Only the applications that Apple sanctions, are allowed in the gates. This is certainly appealing to some men and women.
A lot of people seem to be confusing the argument of iPad vs. other tablets with the argument of tablets vs. laptops/netbooks. I think it is obvious that there is a market for a product (tablets) that bridges the gap between full-fledged laptop/netbooks and internet-capable phones, so I don't see much point in arguing tablets vs. laptops. What you are saying here is what I've been asserting regarding iPad vs. other tablets. Apple has built up so much brand equity with their recent products that consumers will choose the Apple experience over functionally better products at equal or lower price points. This is what every company dreams of doing, and Apple has hit the ball out of the park in that respect.
Well, more specifically I would like to see it run snow lepoard or a cripple version as opposed to running a modified iphone OS.
i find it hilarious that so many of you have got your panties so wadded up that you can't see straight. HAHA, you're doomed!
Because of Apple software and service. Basically. (And if you want to get down to technicals, multitouch is DA BOMB, among other features)
Have you ever called Asus for customer service? Those computers suck balls. At least bring up this http://www.amazon.com/Archos-160-Internet-Tablet-Android/dp/B002OL2PM4 but it's still suck. I know, I Bought one
Fixed. McDonalds Spicy McChicken is also the most popular Chicken sandwich based on your logic. You get what you pay for and with cheap computers you don't get much.
What, that all netbooks suck? Now you're reaching that elitist stratosphere we've come to know and love from Apple devotees.
This "cheap" computer is far more powerful than an iPad, has faaar more storage and memory than an iPad, does a heck of a lot more than an iPad, multitasks, runs Flash, runs for 11 hours on battery and boots within seconds. But yeah, feel free to revel in the "Apple experience" for a $200 premium.
