Here's how it works... A network spends a lot of money on TALENT to develop a TV show, if the show fails, the same execs scramble to find the TALENT another project so they won't look stupid. That describes the Wayne Brady Show, sure dude is talented but really, who is gonna watch his daytime show. If Bette Midler had a fishing show would anyone watch that, hell naw! I'm pissed because this show is taking the place of Houston's Debra Duncan Show, sure it's not a guy show but it does represent Houston in kind light. I could be wrong and in some ways I hope that I am, but I think that the WBS will be a huge bust, then his TV finale will be THE WAYNE BRADY FISHING SHOW!
He is amazing on that show, but it is not improv in it's purest form. Most of the bits are staged. They work out a lot of their bits at the IMPROV on Melrose in LA on Thursday nights.
Somehow I knew those bits weren't made up on the spot. I wish they would bring back Live TV shows. Jackie Gleason did it with the Honeymooners. That show was amazing.
I used to love Whose Line. Absolutely loved it, especially the older episodes where they had different people on every week. I quickly found that the newer episodes get boring pretty fast, though, with the same people ALL the time (Wayne, Colin, Ryan, Chip). Now, I don't bother watching it at all.
My heart hath been shattered like a child who just found out Santa Claus isn't real. DAMN THE WORLD! DAMN THE WORLD!
I watch wrestling a lot. Vince McMahon was interviewed by Bob Costas and Vince replied to a question saying that 2.5% of the fans think it is real...I thought: "who would be dim enough to think this is real?" Then I went to a live event and it made perfect sense.
I saw them film an episode of Whose Line when I was in LA. It certainly wasn't staged. I know that since they play the same games, or skits over and over again that it can look a little TOO SMOOTH, but believe me it certainly was improv. BUT, The part of the show you see on TV is just a bit of what is done. THey are there for like 2 hrs and then condense it and just show the best 22 minutes on TV. So there is ALOT of dead time while watching it live that you can TELL it isn't staged. (Some of it was BORING) All in all, the TV is very funny and Wayne Brady is one of the best people on TV.
Go to the Improv on Thursday nights during the times that they are taping, that night is Drew Carey night. Maybe you saw what they created there. You can call the Improv and I'm sure they will validate my claim.
I used to watch the show when i lived in England a few years ago. Some of the same guys were on it, Ryan etc and yes i've seen some of those bits before. It's far from improv.
my wife's last partner at work (where she taught 1st grade) dated Wayne Brady a while ago..said he was a really nice guy. he certainly seems to be...
