Chuck Hayes is obscenely unappreciated

Uh . . . Jeffries's contract is not going to "kill us". Jeffries's contract is the very thing that has garnered the Rockets Jordan Hill, the right to swap picks with the Knicks in 2011, and the Knicks' 2012 pick. THAT, my friend, is a pretty damn good contract, all things considered.

Sure, the addition of the salaries of both Jeffries and Hill will push the Rockets closer to (and likely over) the luxury tax threshold, that was the price paid for accruing multiple future assets. If Hayes is the unintended victim of the Rockets' financial situation, it would still be worth the benefit.

Still, it would be nice to have Chuck around next year as a 9th or 10th man.

I think if the Nets hire JVG, we might have some competition for re-signing him. JVG is found of defensive minded players and may push the Nets front office into getting Hayes.

Im also worried that since the new owner of the Nets is rich as hell, he may offer Hayes more money, and thus, we may lose him. He is my favorite player and I want to see him win a championship with us!

Personally, I hope Chuck Hayes stays right here.

He's better at being Shane Battier than Shane Battier was or is. I don't care that he's underappreciated or barely recognizable outside of his locker room.

Chuck Hayes knows how to win. He'd have solved most of the Rockets' problems at the four-spot on his own if he'd been 6 inches taller.

Hayes' role will have to be reduced to situational substitutions gong forward but I would love that.

Just give Hayes a job. He'll do it.

Agreed. My appreciation for the Chuckwagon has never wavered. Have I grown frustrated with our situation that forces him play heavy minutes in a disadvantageous role? Absolutely, but that in and of itself is not HIS fault -- and I recognize that. I just hope his days of seeing heavy minutes are over with. In any event, I really hope he's back next year and doesn't fall victim to the numbers game.

P.S. It's a shame Pierce didn't try his typical forearm push-off in that situation.

He's one of the few Rockets that would make me sad to see in another uniform.

his option will get picked up, if he becomes a free agent, he will get signed for the LLE by one of the contending teams.

Wasn't Jordan who Morey wanted from the start? And the two draft picks were consolation for Jeffries' contract?

Anyway, I agree with you. JJ himself has value but it's his contract that pushes us into luxury tax, making it costly for us to re-sign Chuck. But as I said, hopefully we don't chuck Chuck at this point of his career.

And to remember he came from DLeague in 2006 as a long shot.
I hope he sticks around, he is such a good defensive player, he brings to the table that smart defense along with Battier

The spin move-shove with shoulder to create space is futile on Chuck. That guy is planted to the ground like a sumo wrestler.

I think Chuck worked on his offense during the off-season. He showed a lot of new moves early into this season but, sadly, I think the coaching staff didn't pursue in developing it - somewhat understandable considering we already had Scola and Landry scoring inside and Chuck was much more needed to defend and rebound.

Hayes is going to be a Rocket for a long time. Adelman and Morey know the value he brings on and off the court. He needs to be a "situational specialist". Ten minutes a game whenever we need a huge boost on defense.

    Great thread Clutch!

he did well on pierce but he's too short for a center.

Anyone can make one play ... but overall, he's a horrible excuse for an NBA player. He doesn't work on his offensive game, he was -11 during the game, his shooting is an embarrassment to the NBA.

Chuck makes several, several plays every game, and he has done it for years.

People complaining about Hayes are forgetting 2 simple facts.

    1. HE's PLAYING CENTER. He does much better playing next to Yao and a playmaker, not in replacement of Yao. The guy is playing out of position and people are complaining that he has trouble offensively over opposing centers? Center is not his natural position and it will never be.

    2. He's playinig INJURED. He's been playing on a hurt knee for a while now. Not only that, he's playing center against players that are much bigger.

It's idiots like northeastfan that don't realize how valuable Hayes is.

Look at his PER! Look at his WS! He's pathetic.

He's like that r****ded kid who plays on your kid's team. You cheer him on like crazy, but you realize in your heart that he just can't play.

I'm not sure how he could be unappreciated here. At least no more than the Rockets themselves. Everyone likes Hayes as a bit role player. I have yet to encounter any fan who thinks Hayes should be the twelveth man or kicked off the roster.

But he's not more than a bit player, at least not on a winning team. He's not a true 25-35 minute rotation player. He's basically a situational defender.

Great call by RA and defense by Chuck. PP couldnt back him down, had it been another defender, Pierce would have had a great 15 foot look, instead he had to rush and fade a bit more..
