Example: I think Oklahoma City should try to trade an expiring contract (Krstic-5.8M or Collison-6.75M), this years draft pick (~20th), and 3,000,000 for a future pick to a team w/ lots of cap space. Then try to sign Bosh or Amare. That would be a scary team!
That would be a good deal for OKC, but what does the team with the cap space get out of it? Aren't most teams with cap space still hoping to sign one of the big free agents?
There are teams like Memphis and Sacramento that aren't in the running for a big free agent. Maybe OKC could throw in another pick.
I think the Rockets should join the LBJ sweepstakes. If LBJ really wanted to leave the Cavs wouldn't it be better for him to do his old team a favor by agreeing to a sign and trade instead of leaving them high and dry for NY/Nets/Chicago? We're really the only team in the NBA that can give the Cavs a pretty good package for him and still be a championship team. For example the Rox can offer the Cavs a package that has Brooks, Hill, Budinger, 2010 lottery pick, 2011 swap with NY, 2012 NY pick, 2012 Rox pick, Jeffries and Battier yet still field a championship lineup with LBJ, Yao, Lowry, Scola and Martin with Ariza, JT and Hayes off the bench. For LBJ, the benefits are numerous: 1) He leaves on good terms with Cleveland (well as good as it can get anyway) 2) He'll be going to a "win now and later" team 3) He'll earn the most money possible with the sign-and-trade and Houston's state income tax laws 4) Partnership with Yao for an even greater influence over the Chinese population Rather than tossing our chips Bosh's way (who may or may not be a significant upgrade over Scola at his price), it might be a better strategy to mortgage the entire farm for LBJ. If it doesn't work out we'll still end up as one of the deepest and most promising teams anyway featuring a starting lineup of Yao, Scola, Ariza, Martin and Brooks with Jordan Hill, Chase Bud, Battier and our lottery pick off the bench.
That's plausable. However I wouldn't include both Hill & Jefferies and I wouldn't include Brooks without getting a point back.
