Anyone here ever fasted before, for religious or health reasons? I'm doing it for health reasons (toxin removal and alcohol, drug detox) although there is debate whether or not our internal organs are plenty capable of removing toxins on their own. I'm on day 8 of a pretty strict distilled water only diet, with the exception of 300 calories worth of organic mixed fruit juice a half hour before time on a bike at the gym. I've read distilled water can entirely strip the body of electrolytes. Its amazing how much extra energy I have and how much less I have to sleep. I've lost 7 pounds, probably mostly water from my ****ty, salt heavy diet. I do indeed have at least 6 ab muscles. The first 3 days are the hardest, mostly from hunger while trying to sleep. I'm thinking I might as well go for 2 weeks. I know, cool story bro, but I thought it might start a discussion on fasting or give people ideas.
I've done a 21 day (no meat, no bread, no eating) before noon fast for church. We were told not to work out or do strenuous activities though. I'm not sure working out during a fast is safe. I did lose a lot of weight and it did help my mood and attitude. Sacrificing is really hard but it feels good when you challenge yourself and see it all the way through.
I remember someone talking about doing the lemon cleanse on here. 1200 calories of lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne.
This really is unhealthy imo if done for extended periods, it will really slow down your metabolism to conserve energy and once you start eating again you will balloon.
I'm my case you in the middle of it (week 2) you can eat Almonds in the morning and a small portion of bread. We had to alternate between Fish and potatoes during the week. No fish the last week.
So what is in a normal day of intake? Just water and fruit? I would like to try but when I get hungry and dont eat enough I get headache during the day.
What's an extended period? 2 weeks sounds alright. I'm thinking the cardio on the bike (45 minutes), although at low levels to prevent passing out, will help keep the metabolism near its normal rate once I return to food. I've read it can be euphoric after a certain amount of time. I kinda want to get to that point.
Yup water and fruit juice. The headaches, dizziness, etc. that you'd expect from lack of food pass after a few days. The body is simply amazing at what it can do to keep itself alive. Very little muscle is used, too. The process of breaking down muscle into energy takes more energy than breaking down fat. Since the body is trying to preserve as much energy as possible, you lose mostly fat.
Extended would be more like a few months, but if you're seriously trying to lose weight/stay healthy/etc, eating small portions throughout the day to keep your metabolism rolling along with some cardio is a much better solution. A hard workout is just as "euphoric" as being on the verge of passing out.
the whole fasting for health promotion is behind losing fat because "toxins get stored in fat." You also could just hit the gym from time to time and eat a healthier diet, but that's too much work for most people.
I do fast regularly but not for weeks. 5 days max. But instead of taking water, I take vegetable juice, non acidic ones. the hard part is when you smell food. but having a juice from organic vegie or fruits will give you enough energy.
As a Muslim, we fast during the month of Ramadan. At first it's a bit hard, but you start to get use to it.....At the end though, you get very weak!
So what specific types of fruit shakes/juices is recommended for these juice-based fasts? And can I just buy those juices from my local grocery store (like V8) or would it only work if I do my own shakes at home? It sounds like something I would definitely want to try, I am in absolute agreement with Bill Maher that our food supply is what is killing us and making us so sick.
Im Muslim too. Basically you fast for like a month, depending on when the moon rises and sets in the lunar calender. You can't eat, drink, swear, or perform sexual activities, which include masturbation, from sunrise to sunset. Its brutal, and suprisingly you actually gain weight during the process.
Just echoing what ASidd has said. It's main point isn't to abstain from eating, but to abstain from your worldly desires. Basically it's like practicing self control, which is always good to apply in life. OP: you fast and work out?? crazy. I tend to sleep all day when I fast.
Sleep all day? Really? I have more energy, operating on 4-5 hours of solid sleep. When I work out, its strictly cardio. Just enough to get a sweat going and only after 30 minutes of an intake fruit juice. I don't wanna pass out. My grandmother is diabetic, so I have her check me at random times throughout the day. My blood sugar tends to stay between 60-80. Speaking of being Muslim, Hakeem Olajuwon played basketball during Ramadan. If I'm correct, Ramadan is abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours. I wonder how he performed during those months? Hope he didn't have many games with the sun up.
