The funny thing about that movie, is the kid never really learns his lesson. The moral of the story seems to be that it's ok to have bad selfish attitude.
I took a different lesson... people need to play/work within a system that allows for individual creativity and initiative. The coach ran an autocratic system, and because he insisted his players be cogs, it was doomed to fail at some level. It was a commentary on the worst aspects of corporate America. (And similar, whether intentional or not, to the Bird/Knight experience.)

yeah, the coach definitely was a problem, and I thought they were building it up to be an ending where both the coach and player learned from one another. But it wasn't. I'm sure your interpretation is the intended one, but I guess because Benson's character was also in the wrong a bit, and didn't really have any ill consequences I just applied a different moral.
