Yao goes down and we drop over 10 spots in defense??? I'm no genius, but i think yao's a BIG reason, if not the only reason, why that happened....its pretty self explanatory.

And this thread sucks. You cant be 1 and 2 every year, especially when you want to increase your scoring. More scoring usually means more posessions, so you pretty much HAVE to take a dip in the defensive standings. #5 sounds about right, it's still really good and we''d be easily top 10 this year too if we were healthy.

Yeah, i suppose you forgot to include that we are missing our 7'6" all-star center.

I'm so happy I wasn't the only one thinking this. People thinking only Yao can fix the defensive problem are delusional. They don't have any transitional defense in which they really have never excelled at, and they don't seem to box out anything. Yao will help due to his presence, but need a re-bounder.

I have to reply to point out the irony of someone called "ICanDunkOnYao" talking about his defensive importance. :p

Nevertheless, I completely agree with your point.

    maybe...

Phil Jackson is a better coach than Adelman...I think thats fair to say.

    better coach = more wins

Not to say Adelman isn't a good coach...but Phil Jackson is just that much better.

But yeah, I forgot we don't have a center this year, so that screws up the triangle offense.

Remember when the Rockets used to play lock down defense. Now, they take the court in matador outfits, cape and all.

The Rockets were a good defensive team the past two years, so I think RA is a capable defensive coach. If he has the right mix of players next year, everything will be fine.

Ya that's why this year is so suprising to me. We were good defensively the last two seasons and this year is just HORRID. I am hoping this is a problem that can be solved over the off season, but we need to get back to the defensive mind set we have had, there is no way we can just go out there and run back and forth 82 games and expect to be elite without some defense.

My explanation. For the first year, it was pretty much JVG's personnel and defense though Rick took over as the head coach. For the second year, you have Ron Artest in the mix so there was not much a drop.

[defense]Yao is not going to save this team...

During the Yao-Mac era, we NEVER had two poor defenders in the backcourt

    Battier-Tmac-Alston
    Sura-Wesley-Tmac
    Alston-Wesley-Tmac
    Battier-Artest-Brooks
    Battier-Ariza-Brooks

    We now have

    Brooks-Martin-Ariza/Battier

Has there ever been a good defensive team with 2 out of 3 backcourt positions being terrible defenders?

NO matter how good your frontcourt help is...

Remember Denver had Nene, Camby, KMart, and they still sucked defensively until Billups came onto the team.

This backcourt is not a long term solution, and we have to get at least two defensive strengths in the backcourt for us to be legit contenders.

firstly, a backcourt only includes guards

secondly, alston-wesley-tmac was not a good defensive lineup. Tmac was rarely a good defender with a few exceptions where he wanted to play defense. Alston was not a good defender despite some people on this board thinking otherwise. Wesley was very undersized and had plenty of trouble with bigger guards. Ariza is another guy who I do not consider a good defender. He can play passing lanes, but is pathetic in one on one situations.

you have 6'6 center, how do you expect us to be a good defensive team this season, RA knew what was going to happen this season, so he focused on offense alot more than he did on defense durring the offseason.

When Yao gets back next year, our style of play gonna change next season, we gonna get back on being half-court offensive team, and I believe we'll get back on being good defensive team.

Yao will make the defense better, but noway he'll make the defense back to elite all by himself.

All those previous years Rockets had at least 3 good defenders in the lineup, sometimes 4. If AB/Martin/Ariza/Scola/Yao starts, it will be 2, and Ariza isn't as good as Battier when he was younger defensively.

Everybody is looking at the easy solution: Yao. But I wonder how we defend pick n' rolls with Yao's slow feet and both AB and Martin's inability to fight through screens next year. Softest backcourt in the league plus slowest Center in NBA and a non-athletic short PF.

Hill need further development before he can start. He misses rotations quite easily at this moment.
