The idea primarily behind BSG is that everyone is human, even the Cylons, and have flaws that come up when they are under stress. It is meant to be a study of the human condition under the most extreme circumstances. Like Lost the idea isn't that these are admirable people who always do the right thing but that they are people thrown together under extraordinary circumstances each with their own past and failings that express themselves. I suspect that the producer Ronald Moore, who previously wrote for Star Trek TNG and DS9, wanted to turn on its head the anti-septic and heroic view of the future seen in Star Trek where the characters always rise to the occasion and are rarely haunted by their past to a vision that was closer to actual human nature.

I agree that a lot of episodes in the middle were just filler, its hard to keep a series consistent, many of the sex scenes were just gratuitous (that problably had more to do with that it was on cable) and they seemed to go out of their way to create interpersonal conflict I still think it was a very good show.

The new BSG is probably one of my favorite shows of all time, I never had a problem with the ending and thought the majority of the episodes were great.

Think it's pretty sweet to see lots of love for DS9, only reason I even gave BSG a shot.

Think it's the best Trek series of the group. I'd probably watch TNG first then move on to DS9.

Think X-files with a Lost slant.

I think most everyone has different preferences on these types of shows....though most everyone likes SG1. Some of my thoughts.

BSG - I was one who watched every episode and really really liked the series. I thought the final season was one of the stronger seasons, and like how it ended. That said, I'd agree with some of the complaints (definitely soap-opera-ish at times, with random, unnecessary sex), and would also agree some of the middle seasons got a little slow and unnecessary. Moreover, the show never really lives up to the mini-series event that started it, which is basically 4 hours of very riveting entertainment. Still, it is quite entertaining all the way through, despite some flaws, isn't too too long a series, has a clear beginning, middle and end, and I would say DOES have a ton of characters you can connect with and care about what happens to (my personal favorite being Gaius).

Somewhat related, the spin-off / prequel show Caprica, which is in season 1 right now, I think has missed the mark. I watched the first 5 or 6 episodes and just haven't gotten around to them on my DVR...it's just...boring.

Firefly - Awesome show, awesome series, awesome movie (Serenity). You'll be dissapointed in how short it is, though.

Dr. Who - I used to like this show way back in the day (i.e. 15+ years ago). I think the modern versions are kind of cheesy and boring....and I like British television. Just not my favorite.

Star Trek Enterpise is actually under-rated. Not great for ST fans but as for Sci-Fi not bad. Much darker and gritty than other ST stuff.

the best thing is you can just set your DVR and get the commercial free HD showings on HDNET. Thanks Cuban!

The mini-series had its flaws (the fact that they even needed a mini-series in the first place due to cancelling the series being #1), but under the circumstances I thought it brought some nice closure to the series as a whole. I've watched plenty of cancelled shows that got absolutely nothing, so I was thankful for what we got.

Personally, I think it is the worst, most formulaic show of retread science fiction on TV. The next original idea they have will be the first. For instance, they steal all the silly cheap easy McGuffins and unobtanium technobabble plot devices straight from Star Trek while discarding the limited number of worthwhile bits. They also liberally borrow the worst parts of other series while discarding the best. Time Tunnel and The Invaders are two that come to mind.

Heck, they can't even be bothered to cast new actors - if you were a minor character in some other SciFi related series, you've got a job waiting for you on the set of Stargate!

So happy to see the DS9 love. It was extremely underapprecited during its run.

    But yeah:
    Star Trek DS9
Stargate SG-1 > Atlantis, but both very very good
    BSG

Remember the crappy sci-fi they used to show on the WB on Sat afternoons? Andromeda, Beastmaster? Those were bad but I somehow ended up watching every single episode...

Best I've seen is a miniseries from like 2000 called Taken. It was produced by Steven Spielberg and it aired on SciFi at the time. It was freakin fantastic.

I just recently bought this series in it's entirety (I think it was like 50 bucks)

I have a podcasting friend who started a Farscape podcast called... fittingly "Scapecast" and he and another friend have told me multiple times that I will love it.

Now I just need to find time to watch!

On the subject of hot women in Sci-Fi IMO Lexa Doig (SG1, Andromeda, some other crappy made in Canada Sci-Fi) is the hottest woman in Sci-Fi

Not sci-fi but fantasy. Anybody ever watch Legend of the Seeker?
I think its pretty hokey but it delivers on the hot female leads.

No one's seen Lexx? The show had the right amounts of kookiness, camp, and a sexy fraulein to boot:

I had the opportunity to catch all of the old episodes several years ago. My favourite was the 3rd Doctor, Jon Pertwee. Baker played the 4th Doctor. In the 80s Pertwee would've been recognised for his role as a scarecrow in the kid's show Worzel Gummidge. Pertwee's Doctor was this strange mix of a foppish new age Errol Flynn.

The episode below is from the 2nd Doctor's run, it features the Dominators. IMO the greatest villains and one of the best episodes of the entire franchise.
