Hai guyz Did you know that Yao Ming's name should be Ming Yao???? Because Yao is his last name and Ming is his first name :grin: :grin:
C. S. B. actually I didn't know Ariza was Dominican, so I guess I learned something from this thread.
You didn't find anything on "Battier" is because his original last name is "Battle." I forgot how it was changed...I remember seeing that in an interview.
Wow, after 8 years we have guys who don't literally don't know Yao's last name from his first. THIS IS OUR MAIN PLAYER. Seriously, everyone who posted Ming is his last name... how can you expect ANYTHING you ever write again to be taken seriously? Knowing the names of your players is like step 1 of being any sort of informed fan... even if you don't know use logic... what name is on the back of his jersey? and do we put last names or first names on the backs of jerseys?
In China, our names are written with our last name first. That's why it's Yao Ming, with Yao in the front. When Chinese people come to America, we usually put the last name after our first name as a tradition of Americans, so Yao Ming should have became Ming Yao. However, Yao Ming just flows out like butter so Ming Yao didn't ever catch on. Anyways, Yao is his last name, Ming is his first name.
Sigh... don't you guys know? Yao Ming is of Eastern European origin: Yao: in Eastern Europe is Gheorghe Ming: roughly translates to Muresan. Hence, our #1 option for next year's real name is of Eastern European origin, which translates to Gheorge Muresan. He's a gentle giant with a big heart. This is true story, I saw it on TV once in a documentary starring Billy Crystal.
wait so the only reason this thread gets a 1 star and not more is because he made an error with Yao Ming's name? Nice thread.
Code: if (yourBelief == YaoIsSurname) { post("I hate to disagree with you folks, but Ming is his surname."); } else { post("I hate to disagree with you folks, but Yao is his surname."); }
^This. There is no excuse for not knowing your team's players, especially the one we've been building the franchise around for almost a decade.
I give this thread an A for effort. It's nice to gain knowledge about history once in a while . Also, Yao is the surname of Yao Ming. 'Nuff said
In China (as in most other countries), people are more formal about names than here, and the surname is considered more important. So in China people would call him Yao Ming, or possibly Mr. Yao. Few people would call him Ming, except his direct friends and relatives. I cringe every time someone calls him Ming, because it's somewhat disrespectful. There's not really an equivalent in in America because here people like to use first names to make everybody feel equal. In China (and in most other countries) people don't expect to be equal.
