Hardy probably got a chain email alerting them to dangers of this Martin and his Brown Bear series and set about making it 'right'.

Hooray for private schools, where politicians don't decide what kids should learn.

I just realized why they want to change the description of the US from a democracy to a republic... democracy sounds too much like Democrats and Republicans should now benefit from it sounding like republic.

As a native Texan, I am embarrassed and disgusted at what our state has become. I know most Texans are so proud to be from here but do not count me in this group at all. As soon as my kids (from Wife #1) are grown (10 more years), we are so out of here. There are plenty of places where people aren't nearly so backwards.

My vasectomy reversal was successful so we hope to adding to the population soon. When we do, they will never attend school in Texas. Home schooling FTW!

Totally agree with you, but also... is it terrible to have kids read both the pros and cons to any given economic system?

I mean, if I want to be NBA champs, and I think my team is the best (and this is how I feel about America), then I can't say "but I won't play the Lakers this year. In fact, let's pretend they don't even exist!"

EDIT: question is not for you, Rokkit, but for the TX BOE.

Now I know what the Republicans were talking about when they referred to the dangers of socialism.

Yeah - but a teacher does not have to emphasize X,Y, and Z in the public classroom either. Lot of variability here. (That's not an excuse of course, the practice of selective indoctrination is disgusting).

    Damn right.

Not that I'm pro-Marxism or pro-Communism or pro-Socialism, but... what is this, China? Since when can we not critique capitalism or the "American system"?

Ironically, Texas is one of the most home-school-friendly states in the Union -- thanks to the wacky Christians who are afraid the public school system is too influenced by atheism.

dont you know that is anti-American to ever say anything bad about America. We should only teach our children that the social and economical system in the U.S is perfect and is the shining example that every country should strive to be. It should be a constitutional amendment that you can never say anyting bad about this country or gov't UNLESS the President is a non conservative.

If we allow kids to question the merits of capitalism, they might realize it's a scam.

This is true. It is VERY difficult to find homeschooling play/study/social groups that are Non-religious around this area. It can also be a challenge to find proper educational materials, as most are catered to the Christians.

In our case, we would mix an American curriculum along with a Swedish/European curriculum. Unfortunately, we found after an extensive research, that the American curriculum alone had a tendency to be too American based and not really "the rest of the world friendly".

It's a double-edged sword. The home-school industry in Texas is geared to Christians because they mostly built the industry. However, other states that don't have the fear of secularism we have here don't have the infrastructure and regulations built to well-accomodate home-schooling. Master Baiter might find too many hurdles to do home-schooling in a practical way if he lived in another state. In Texas, there is a lot of acceptance (comparatively) of home-schooling. The only problem, which is surmountable, is building a secular curriculum if that's what he wants.

There's lots of good stuff out there. For instance, you could take this series and with a little work and a few supplemental materials build a nice foundation for learning.
