    Pros and cons for both?

It's about $10 cheaper at my local mechanic, and its only 5 minutes away. My car dealership is a good 35 miles away. But is it worth it to trust a mechanic who KNOWS more about your car then anyone?

ALSO, I've had it for 3 months today, but I'm only at 2200 miles. Should I still change the oil right away or wait for 3k?

Its a 2010 Nissan Rogue btw.

It's an oil change, not rocket science. Your local mechanic will more than suffice. Better yet, learn to do it yourself.

This is definitely thread worthy. Also, thanks for letting us know what you drive. That too was necessary. All around awesome thread.

You can't trust anybody more than yourself. It's easy. Newer cars you can usually go about 5000 miles before oil change if I'm not mistaking.

Truly a dealer will put some generic brand of oil anyway so what the hell is the difference and they say they check other stuff but you can tell if fluids are low or whatever. Just do it yourself or go to your local mechanic man.

If the Youtubes can inform you of alien crop circles, then it can inform you on oil changes (with or without alien involvement).

Getting your oil changed every 3k miles is a conspiracy I can believe in.

You're a sucker if you get it changed every 3k/3 months.

I can't wait for your next thread about the dilemma of who to chose change a tire or replace a taillight. Make sure to mention the car make and model in that one too.

Go to whatever place has the oil change special. Also coming from a guy who owns 18 wheelers, treat your vehicle with the lucas upper cylinder treatment once a month and change the oil every 5k and it will treat you good.

Yup. If your car is under 10 years old, change your oil around 5K/5m. Independent studies shows that oil is usually good up to 7500 miles under normal conditions, but to be safe change it at 5K. Older cars are a different story.

It's better for the environment and saves you money. Tell all your friends.

I don't think most mechanics, dealer and non dealer, can fix the UFO you fly.

everyone saying every 5k.. there's usually a caveat in there. And that is that you need to check your oil level every so often (at least between 3k and 5k). The oil itself is fine...as long as it's high enough. But I've been told by a lot of car people that the level can drop in that period, and that's why the "3500 miles" figure is given out still...because people are lazy and don't check it. So they're safer having someone change it than going around 5k miles without looking once

All joking aside, there is a crtical thing to check for on the 1st oil change. There is a rubber seal between the oil filter and the engine. Often when the new engine is painted, this seal will get stuck to the engine with paint and will not come off with the filter. If the guy changing the oil does not notice, this will cause a leak and you could burn up your engine. So who ever you have change it, tell them you want to see the old filter and make sure the old seal is with it.

If you plan on going 5-7k between oil changes, it might be worth going synthetic.

Let's see....I can drive to the store to buy the filter and 5 quarts of oil for $20+ dollars, drive back home, spend 15 minutes getting under my car to empty the oil and change the filter, load in the new oil, find a place to dispose of the old oil and filter and then clean up, OR, I can stop by the dealer on my way to work, pay them less than $20 and be on my way in less than 30 minutes. Not too tough of a choice.

I need to go to your dealer then - I have never heard of a dealership charging less than $20 for an oil change.
