I am watching the ESPN Doc on him vs the Knickerbockers and I cant help but feel amazed at his game, but historically how will people view Reggie Miller?
See what Larry Brown said about him, actually it was very true, but no doubt he is very deserving of the HOF.
I can't believe this program didn't at least reference the 1998, 99 and 2000 playoff series between these two teams. They were just as good as 94 and 95. Well, the 98 matchup wasn't that great, but the 99 and 2000 pacers/knicks series were excellent.
Looks like I spoke too soon, the 99 series with Larry Johnson's 3 was highlighted at the end, but no 2000 when Indy finally broke through against NY to make the Finals?
Some of the best playoff series of all time were during those years. Keep in mind, that those years weren't even the Jordan years.
Recorded as I was watching the Pacific. All 30/30 ESPN specials are money though. Can't wait to watch tomorrow.
Actually JB, the Pacers beat the Knicks in 95 (in 7 games), before losing to the Magic in 7 games. Yeah, I do agree with most posters that's when the playoffs were actually exciting from beginning to end. West: Rockets, Jazz, Suns, Supersonics, Spurs, Trailblazers, Lakers (the twilight of Showtime, Jones/Divac/Van Exel team with Magic for one year, and the early Shaq-Kobe years), and even Golden State (in odd years), very good teams. East: Bulls, Knicks (Riley team's and JVG teams), Pacers, Magic (with Shaq), Heat (with Mourning/Riley), Hawks (Nique's teams and Mutombo years), Hornets (with Mourning/LJ early in their careers and later with the Rice led teams), Pistons (near end of the Bad Boys era and the beginning of the Grant Hill years), and the underachieving Cavs (who probably had one of the more talented teams in late 80s/early 90s).
Are the episodes of the pacific going to be available for download? I always liked reggie miller, such a nice shot. the kicking out his leg to draw contact was just a bonus.
Watched that program as well. I don't know why, but today, NBA basketball doesn't have the same grit that it did in the 90s.
Reggie was real good. He was a top 5 shooting guard during his era. Jordan and Drexler were clearly better than him. After that I'm having a hard time thinking of better shooting guards.
Reggie was clutch. Granted he would generally foul guys to get open. Just watch the push off he would do coming around screens. And how he would kick his leg out on his shot. But you have to love these things about him. And certainly he was a fierce competitor. I feel he was just never on the right team. That Pacers team with Ron Ron was good, but to immature at the time. And oh yeah......he has gotten in a fight with Jordan and Kobe on the court.
I personally think its how they call the game now a days. Superstars get every foul when they barely get touched and physical play is frowned upon. I think those two things don't allow us to have great physical battles in series' like the 90's, 80's and 70's did.
Not good enough to get a 90 minute special for two teams that never won the title in 94 or 95. We all know who did.
Reggie Miller was definitely a player that brought it for the playoffs. He made Indiana Pacers basketball of all teams a must-watch for the postseason.
Reggie was very good for an extended period of time, but never great. A super clutch shooter who had the ability to get open anywhere on the floor. He never made a 1st OR 2nd All-NBA team and he was only All-NBA 3rd team three times, meaning that he was never regarded as one of the top two players at his position in any year, and was only considered the third best in three separate seasons. He also only made it on 5 all-star teams. He was an almost-franchise player who was forced to try to carry a team all by himself, and he never really got them over the hump.
