He moved on to be an assistant coach with the Celtics organization. He's been there for several years now, beefing up their defense. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Thibodeau
Is this a joke? He is the main reason the Celtics won the championship in '08 (in terms of the defensive strategy that won it).
I think people do Adelman a great disservice by only thinking him as an offensive coach, i.e. "Rick Adelman offense". Defensive efficiency Ranking in his full seasons in Portland. #4 #3 #3 #4 #12 Defensive efficiency ranking in his full seasons at Sacramento #18 #10 #7 #6 #2 #21(Webber injury) #23 #12(Artest) His Portland teams were always good on defense, except in his last year for reasons unknown to me since I'm not a Portland fan. At Sacramento, Adelman took over an absolute joke of a franchise that was a bottom feeder(similar to how Sacramento looks now after he left). They did trade Richmond for Webber in his first year, and drafted Peja. The decline of the Sacramento defense occured with Webber's injury, which resulted in an interior combo of Miller and Divac. Whatever you may think of Webber, he was a very good defender. Brad Miller, Kenny Thomas, and Shareef-Abdul Rahim? Not so much.
you stole my thunder right after i just looked up the same stats. adelman coached 5 top 4 defenses before he got to the rockets and we have ranked 2nd and 4th his first 2 seasons with the rockets. that's 7 top 4 defenses. i'd say the man knows how to coach defense. and the kings even posted those high ranking defenses while being the fastest paced team in the league, which just doesn't really happen that often. as for jvg's performance without yao and tmac, we had crappy role players, now we have really good role players. in the heyday of the white boy power squad (2nd half of 2004-2005 season), we had a really good looking offense. yao and tmac were working well together, the role players were passing and hitting 3's, juwan howard never missed that baseline 15 footer. when jvg had some offensive talent, we could have a pretty good offense. i'd say he would have done quite well the last 3 years. and while i would still give jvg the defensive edge over adelman and adelman the offensive edge over jvg, the differences are not nearly what lazy/casual observers would think. i'd say both did very good jobs of maximizing our win totals (even when we should have been drafting roy) and we were lucky to have each as a coach. in fact, we've had 3 coaches in 18 years and they've all been really good. considering the coaching carousel that goes on in most of the league, we've been quite fortunate.
it's a play on Inside the NBA that i think started when barkley said "larry bird must be rolling over in his grave" after a really bad celtics game a few years ago. he may have said it before then, but that was the first time i heard it. now they say similar things any time a team/player is doing really poorly.
The one edge I put Adelman over JVG is that he knows how to shore up his weakness on the coaching staff. JVG had a replica of himself with Thibidoeu(butchered his name, sorry), while Adelman complemented his own offensive creativity with a great defensive assistant. So overall I find Adelman's team more well-rounded, so to speak. But you're right. They're all great coaches. To me, if the Rockets fail, it won't be on Adelman. Just like I didn't think it was on JVG. It just means we weren't good enough. Either that, or the refs are in Sterns pockets and we get a repeat of the Kings-Lakers debacle that robbed Adelman of his deserved championship ring.
This comment is so ridiculous I'm not even sure how to respond to it. Have you been living under a rock in Siberia the past couple of years? Have you even watched the Rockets play during the last two years? Compared to most of the league they've played strong defense. In the game against Utah four of their best defenders were out with injuries. Four. Any team would struggle mightily under those circumstances.
I don't know why you're offended. We've been an average defensive team at best this season. Points Per Game: 101.1 (12th of 30) ▪ Opponent Points Per Game: 101.7 (20th of 30) Pythagorean W-L: 28-30 (17th of 30) Arena: Toyota Center ▪ Attendance: 482,495 (19th of 30) SRS: 0.30 (16th of 30) ▪ Pace Factor: 93.6 (8th of 30) Offensive Rating: 106.7 (15th of 30) ▪ Defensive Rating: 107.3 (16th of 30) Most of the league? We're not even better than half the league. We were a good defensive team last year, but the fact that we've been declining defensively is a legitimate concern. The return of Yao might sure up our defense, but heck, it might not...
It might be a good idea to actually pay attention to what you read. knote32 was talking about what Adelman's done since he came to Houston. Corpusfan is talking about what Adelman's done since he came to Houston. Reading comprehension can be a struggle at times, I'm sure, but it helps if you process what you read before posting, or so I've heard.
more like hes helping beef up the mediocrity to scrub team faxctor. the celtics are playing horrible lately. plus they lost to the nets!!!!!!!!!
Freak, will the Rockets win a championship in the next 10 years? Ten years later, we need to update the original point of the post.
You have to either be a teenager or dimwit. RA is no doubt the best coach not named Phil Jackson. JVG hasnt accomplished even a third of what RA has as a coach. Even with all that "defensive intensity" ,JVG couldn't get out of the first round. If you get your head out of your behind, you could see that defensively we've gone down because of no Yao.
if you dont know basketball, then you surely wont know who can coach basketball. ask nba coaches, and they would rave about thibodeau, and rudy, and van gundy, and adelman....we have been very very fortunate, but we have a lot of people who just dont know what they just dont know...
JVG hasn't accomplished even a third of what RA has as a coach? JVG's team made playoffs 9 out of 10 seaons, RA's team made playoffs 16 out of 18 seasons. JVG took an 8th seed team to NBA final, RA took two 1st/2nd seed teams to NBA final. JVG had one losing season out of 10, RA had 3 losing seasons out of 18. JVG took Rockets to 1st playoff series in Steve Francis era, RA took Rockets to 2nd round for the first time in many years. JVG couldn't get out of the first round as a Rocket coach because his team was not as talented as RA's and the opponent was stronger than RA's in playoffs, not because he was not good. Both coaches are great with strength and weakness.
