Hornets' Davis replaces injured Kidd on U.S. team

NEW YORK (AP) -- An injured Jason Kidd was dropped from the U.S. roster for the World Basketball Championship on Monday, replaced by New Orleans Hornets guard Baron Davis.

Kidd, who led the New Jersey Nets to the NBA Finals last season, was taken off the 12-man team because of an injured groin. He was hurt during the Eastern Conference finals against Boston.

"The feeling was it would go away, but it hasn't yet," Nets president Rod Thorn said. "It's still bothering him, and the feeling of our medical staff and Jason was we ought to play it safe."

Kidd is expected to be ready for the start of next season.

The FIBA World Championship is Aug. 28-Sept. 8 in Indianapolis. The U.S. team begins training Aug. 16 in San Francisco.

Kidd was on the gold medal-winning U.S. team at the 2000 Olympics.

Davis, who played for the United States in the 2001 Goodwill Games at Brisbane, Australia, averaged 18.1 points, 8.5 assists and 3.1 steals for the Hornets last season.

The rest of the U.S. roster for the World Championship: Ray Allen, Elton Brand, Antonio Davis, Michael Finley, Raef LaFrentz, Shawn Marion, Andre Miller, Reggie Miller, Jermaine O'Neal, Paul Pierce, Ben Wallace

I actually got an article in before somebody else. Small victories.

Too bad USA basketball wasn't paying attention to NBA survivor or else they may have chosen francis. Why the hell is Reggie Miller on this team, BTW?

Why is Reggie Miller on this team. He's been on almost every national team since the 96 olympics and I think it's time they give his spot to player who hasn't gotten the chance. I'm dissapointed to see Steve still hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves.

Does anybody think he'll ever make it? Deserving or not, I think his draft day performance soured the league, and thus usa basketbll, on him as not the type of player they want represetning the US.

Lafrentz is a pretty questionable inclusion too. Why the hell do they pick these guys so early? THat's how guys like steve smith and tim hardaway end up on the team. They should wait till after the season before.

Ummm...I don't think we need Steve to be playing in the world championships coming off major shoulder surgery. Don't worry, he'll be on the 2004 Olympic team

Reggie Miller is on the team because he plays for the Pacers

Reggie Miller is the team mascot.

Raef is being groomed as his successor...

Steve is busy getting healthy and getting his contract. I hope this doesn't irritate him. It shouldn't.

I'm sure the US really wants a flamboyant showboat in Francis representing the country. I can just imagine him hanging on the rim for 1 minute after throwing down a dunk, and then flexing his muscles for all the world to see.

Boy, kidrock8, your really on a roll with Steve, aren't you? Is he like those pesky sand fleas... an irritant at an otherwise beautiful place, like a beach at Yucatan?

Steve's just gotten under my skin in the last year or so. I will shut up promptly if he's able to mature, as well as putting his money where his mouth is.

Fair enough. If everyone agreed about everything around here it'd be pretty damn boring. :D

As long as he makes it to the 2004 Olympics I'll be happy.

Kidrock8, didn't VC and some of the other younger players hanging on the rim after dunks and screaming on opposing teams after dunks? Calm down w/ the Steve hate. He's here and he's staying for a while so sit back and enjoy the show.

Does anybody think this team has a chance of losing? I don't know what other teams are going to be there but this team sucks when compared even to the 96 or 00 olympic teams, (although 00 wasn't that good with dead weight like vin Baker, allen houston, steve smith) and they will only "practice" for 2 weeks in various san francisco night spots. the 00 team barely won if you remember.

They barely won one of the games, but were pretty much dominant for the rest of the tournament. They played far too lackadaisically that year. Hopefully, with all the attention that European players have gotten of late, the team will realize that they won't win putting out half-ass efforts.

Baron deserves to be on the US team. If Francis makes a full recovery and plays well it will be very interesting to see him and Baron go against each other in the upcoming season.

I agree that Lafrentz is probably not USA team material but I am not sure that there is anyone better out there. I think the team is already weak at the center position. Am I missing someone, what centers are not on the team?

One more question. I understand Jay Williams being an alternate, but how did Nick Collison get chosen as an alternate

I would take Baron over Francis for the team anyway.

Baron is a better PG then Steve.
