You can buy a chord chart at pretty much any Guitar Center that you can hang up like a poster. If you haven't gone to Guitar Center, check it out... their prices are high, but you can get some advice on what you need to get going.
A few useful free sites for beginners: Guitar Chords - http://www.chordie.com/chords.php (kinda cool because you can easily click on the individual chord grids to see variations) Guitar Tuner - http://www.howtotuneaguitar.org/ (all different tunings available)
Just say no to drugs, moes! ... And OP, say YES to Smoke on the Water. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3Zz1gOIxHPE&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3Zz1gOIxHPE&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
I've seen different variations on different tabs. When I play it standard it always sounds a bit off, so I assume there is a different tuning that produces a better sound.
Not quite. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/k0KKGdb4qUY&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/k0KKGdb4qUY&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
debatable, but please tell me you've seen some beginner who doesn't know how to play smoke on water. Btw, I would learn electric instead, if you know how to play a power chord, you can pretty much just jam without people knowing you suck. But you HAVE to get your basic chords, the majors mostly.
Ha - me too - 1988 - no solo though. I played that and the Church - Milky Way, Jane's Addiction - Jane Says, and some Cult songs Ha
Even so, Horse with No name is played entirely on the 2nd fret. There are 2 chord progressions. It was the first song I learned how to play and it took all of 30 seconds.
I teach guitar lessons for chump change. I am always asked this question. I usually tell them to find God, G, D, and C Majors, and you have yourself every worship song ever. E and A minor chords and scales will go far in latin styles. It hurts to play F major? GOOD! This means you are doing work to expand the range of your guitar muscles, and the ability to move digits and limbs indepently. I've been playing for 10 years and barred chords still make my hands cramp. You just fight through the cramps, like basketball. Learning other people's music is a great way to practice, just make sure you attempt all parts of the composition and don't shy away from chords/licks you can't quite put together yet. I learned 90% of what I know from probably 4 or 5 albums. Never stop learning songs. covers i wish i had a proverbial dollar for: easier: Oasis-Wonderwall Sublime-What I Got Sweet Home Alabama Radiohead-Go To Sleep Beatles-Hey Jude Beatles-Blackbird Bob Marley-Could You Be Loved Coldplay-Green Eyes Death Cab for Cutie-Title and Registration Death Cab for Cutie-Crooked Teeth House of the Rising Sun Fastball-The Way Finger Eleven-One Thing Nick Drake-Pink Moon Jack Johnson-Sitting, Waiting, Wishing Jewel-You Were Meant for Me Deep Purple-Smoke on the Water Wallflowers-One Headlight Kings of Leon-Use Somebody Led Zeppelin-The Ocean Live-Lightning Crashes Natasha Bedingfield-Unwritten Pink Floyd-Hey You Raconteurs-Old Enough Red Hot Chili Peppers-Scar Tissue more challenging: John Mayer-My Stupid Mouth John Mayer-Why Georgia Elliott Smith-Sweet Adeline Phoenix-Lisztomania Incubus-Drive Matt Wertz-Counting to 100 Eric Clapton-Layla Jeff Buckley-Grace Led Zeppelin-Stairway to Heaven
Looooove that song. Would rep you if I could (not that you need it). The chords are easy for the song but the finger-picking can be tricky. I also finger-pick the banjo part on the guitar.
The one pretty tricky song I learned how to play early on was Blackbird by The Beatles. You get a good fretboard workout from that one.
oh yes it's so easy. There are two different ways to play it. One is by doing a different tuning which is the one you're talking about, but the other way is so simple. Here are the tabs for it and it sounds perfect. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/g/goo_goo_dolls/slide_ver3_tab.htm Pretty much it's E, D, C, G while having your ring finger on the 3rd fret of the B string and leaving the high e open
Ok...I know you are probably a guy, so I was hesitant to say this song. But it's so f'n easy that I learned it in 5 minutes, literally....not joking, and I had never played guitar before at that time. It was the first song I ever learned. Anyway.....Sixpence None the Richer-Kiss Me. Can't believe I just admitted that. Anyway, try it and you will get it in no time.
http://justinguitar.com/ This, and you will be doing the solo for November Rain in no time. There's guitar lessons there, step by step in an easy way. He also teaches songs in an easy way. As you learn more by each lesson, he'll teach you a song that uses the tools that you just learned. otherwise songs will take a very long time if you are trying to do everything by scratch. Baby steps... baby steps.
The best way to learn how to play guitar is to play with other people. You will learn a lot more from that rather than just reading tabs or chord sheets. Since you are starting out on acoustic you might want to look into open jams, you can start with country or blue grass as those are pretty easy to pick up and help you pick up basics. If you really want to be good study Classical or Jazz. I started out playing classical guitar as a kid and then played in Jazz band even though I haven't read sheet music in 20 years that foundation has stuck with me and I find I can pick things up by ear pretty well and have no problem playing almost any style of music on guitar.
