Look, I agree..........if given the choice. From all the reaction I've seen, XIII's story isn't going to win any awards. I'll wait on that judgement until I beat it though. It would be nice to have both. XII's story wasn't bad, but the character's were a bit forgettable. I guess looking back, IX wasn't perfect, but I really liked some of those characters and their stories. Not to the level of VII or X mind you, but still enjoyed them. As for X, there were a bunch of little things you could do talking to people in towns or on the side of the road. Then there was the lightning minigame. Also the monster collection was ok. Finally, I was all about scouting for Blitzball players. My team was money.

Honestly though, FFX sucked for the first several hours as well. Gotta give a game time to flesh everything out before any decisions are made. Early impressions: -Easily the best-looking console game released to date. Absolutely stunning visuals, both in-game and CG. GOW3 may challenge the in-game stuff though, from what I've seen. -Lots of potential for the combat system, but pretty basic thus far. I'm looking forward to gaining more abilities and putting them to use. -Voice acting is top-notch (as far as video games go, anyway), though Vanille sounds... bizarre. -What kind of twisted mother bestows the name "Hope" on her son?
Have the game Too tired to play, only got 3 hours of sleep cause of going to the airport in the morning 10 dollar gift card came with Target purchase was nice though.
Same here. Still looking forward to playing it at some point though. Just will lower my expectations. Can't. Too difficult to make towns in HD. (I still think XII a fantastic game)
Seems like a lot more positives reviews everywhere now that it's out and everyone is actually playing it.
Hmm. I'm about five hours in. Man, they ain't kidding about the game being linear. So far I'm fine with it, but I don't know how I will feel as the game progresses. But literally, the game to this point has been just one 'area' after another...a very set path, like an adventure/action game, with a few dead ends where you can pick up some loot. I have a feeling I will start missing some towns and sidequests pretty soon, though.... Game looks awesome, graphics are great and the environments are a wonder. I'm playing on PS3. So far just about all the characters are ****, though. I'm enjoying it, but I'm still early on....
I'm about 10 hours in to the game right now and so far I have really enjoyed it, combat is great and it's only going to get more fun and complex here on out. The story is pretty crazy from the get go but i'm digging it. Visuals are top notch and the voice acting is a lot better than I expected from the english cast (well idk exactly what to say about vanille... it's.... different lol) This game definitely isn't a traditional FF game but I really like what they did with it and despite about the mix opinions and reviews, I think many people will come to enjoy this game.
I dont know about the ps3's version but this is the 360's version i've been playing: engage enemy, press A, A, down, down A. end battle. move forward. engage enemies, press A, A, A,A A. end battle. short CGI scene. Repeat. L'Cie, Pulse L'Cie, Fal'Cie, Pulse Fal'Cie............WTF mind = blown. extremely boring.
Pretty much describes my experience with the first two hours or so. Fortunately combat starts improving rapidly as more features will be opened up and the story starts to become progressively less fuzzy. So far, for me at least, it has gone from being lackluster to extremely addictive.
Played a couple of hours. Battle System = Win. People for decades have complained about grinding. You can get in and out of a fight in less than 10 seconds. I like how you can see the enemies on screen before engaging in battle vs random encounters. Load times = Win. Barely any load times at all. I don't know how SE did it, but it's a huge improvement over the ps1/ps2 days. Sazh = Fail. Jar Jar Blinks light is spot on. I don't like how he shoots his guns too. He looks like he's striking poses vs actually shooting someone. Lightning = Female Cloud?? Hope = Emo Kid? Vanille = Shakes her butt too much when she walks. I think they tried to give her too much personality. I guess she's the free spirit in the group. Snow = Hero? Ha...jk. Acts too much like a macho man. So far, it's my third favorite FF. FF3 > FF7 > FF13. I wonder when they'll release a old school FF similar to FF3, Kefka ftmfw. I miss the old battle tune when you win. I think this is the first FF w/o it??
Same here, but I only played for like 10 minutes last night. I'm looking forward to there actually becoming some strategy to the game.
ALL you haters need to swallow some intelligence. For those on the fence here it is in my dirty opinion. Excellent game. Excellent. Game. The bottom line here is the story...its linear but what game isnt? The fake freedom people remember in the older FF's are just that, forced. The game directed you down a certain path and you made it there with the same random battles as usual. There is an open world area for training that comes later on in the game. The combat is satisfying. You only control one person but influence the team members. I find myself powering up my team, then throttling them down to heal, then if its a boss I will throw in some debuffs then go back to my powerhouse team. Customizing weapons is back, and so is strengthening your team members in the crystal section. The graphics are mind blowing. The sound is incredible. The story is inspiring. Buy it, and enjoy it. I can promise you that if this game wasnt named Final Fantasy people would be creaming over it as GOTDecade.
Yeah, I've been doing that too, so far. Paradigm shifting several times in battle already adds an element of strategy to the fight, and eventually I assume auto-battle repeatedly won't be a sufficient method for deleting bosses.
I think that Hope is by far one of the more annoying characters. Every time his b**** ass whines I wanna reach in the tv and choke him. and happen to like the black dude and his chocobo he is kinda corny sometimes but he is no jar jar binks. Anyone found any handy guides about how to most efficiently upgrade your items?
I think it is better to trick the user into thinking things aren't as linear as it actually appears, which most jRPGs try to do. I'm not asking for something as non-linear as Oblivion (in fact, I prefer FF not to be). But if the game literally feels like a giant dungeon crawler, just with changing environments every so often, it could feel a bit tiring. I think things like towns and side-quests (particularly those that involve exploring) can help break up the gameplay, as well as make gamers feel more attached to the world. For example, in Mass Effect 2, I can listen to various people in towns talk about what is going on around the universe. A perspective I couldn't really get if the game was just a big dungeon crawler. All that said, the linear aspect of the game is likely overblown. I still don't think it will be that big of a negative to me. What bothers me isn't so much the few minor negatives that have been mentioned, but the rare mentions of anything truly great about the game. Again, if this had an awesome story, fantastic characters, amazing gameplay (apparently it's pretty good in parts, but I'd expect better), etc., then I don't think these negatives would really matter. My impression is that it doesn't really excel in many areas (other than graphics and maybe sound), which disappoints me. However, perhaps I'll be in for a surprise once I actually play it. BTW, the games caps your levels right (at least until late in the game)? Or EXP or whatever they use. That bothers me too, and plays a bit into the linearity complaint I think. Could be fun spending some time leveling up and gaining new abilities, but if it caps your progress, just feels even more linear IMO.
