NEW YORK -- An injured Jason Kidd was dropped from the U.S. roster for the World Basketball Championship on Monday, replaced by New Orleans Hornets guard Baron Davis.

Kidd, who led the New Jersey Nets to the NBA Finals last season, was taken off the 12-man team because of an injured groin. He was hurt during the Eastern Conference finals against Boston.

"The feeling was it would go away, but it hasn't yet," Nets president Rod Thorn said. "It's still bothering him, and the feeling of our medical staff and Jason was we ought to play it safe."

Kidd is expected to be ready for the start of next season.

The FIBA World Championship is Aug. 28-Sept. 8 in Indianapolis. The U.S. team begins training Aug. 16 in San Francisco.

"It's unfortunate that Jason Kidd won't be a part of the 2002 USA Basketball team," said Stu Jackson, chairman of USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team. "He has been a great player for USA Basketball over the years and will be sorely missed."

Kidd was on the gold medal-winning U.S. team at the 2000 Olympics.

Davis, who played for the United States in the 2001 Goodwill Games at Brisbane, Australia, averaged 18.1 points, 8.5 assists and 3.1 steals for the Hornets last season.

"This is a great honor," Davis said. "It's unfortunate what happened to Jason Kidd. He's a great point guard. But I'll do my part to make everyone happy."

The rest of the U.S. roster for the World Championship: Ray Allen, Elton Brand, Antonio Davis, Michael Finley, Raef LaFrentz, Shawn Marion, Andre Miller, Reggie Miller, Jermaine O'Neal, Paul Pierce, Ben Wallace.

Alternates are Nick Collison and Jay Williams.

It would have been so cool if Francis made the team and had the chance of going against Ming when the U.S. plays China. Don't you think so?

Isn't he recovering from injury? Even if he was cleared, I wouldn't really want to risk it.

Even with an injury i doubt the league would have added him.

I agree. Stevie just got cleared for pick-up games. We don't want him in the World Championships, even if was selected.

Wasn't Stu Jackson with the Grizzlies when Steve refused to play there? Eventhough Steve is hurt, Stu still hasn't forgot that. That's ok, he is still better than Davis or Andre Miller.

We've already got one cornerstone (Ming) playing year-round hoops. We don't need to exhaust our Franchise, too, even if he could play right now.

Besides, Francis is everything that's wrong with the NBA right now, didn't you know? No way he should play for the U.S. team!

    One of these: ;) I'm Kidd-ing.

And one of these:  Because Francis still hasn't entirely sloughed off that "I don't want to speak Canadian" thing; especially if Stu Jackson is on the committee.

Wait, let me try this one, too:  Because ain't nothin I can do to change NBA politics.

steve wouldn't have been picked even if he was completely healthy. i also seriously doubt he would be on the team even if we won 50 games and made the playoffs.

Yeah you're right. Stu sucks and Francis is better than Miller and Davis. Once Stu gets fired one of these days Francis will get a chance to play international ball. Hopefully by the next Olympics.

If Francis ever matures, and can play with class, then he will be on a US team.

What is playing with class? We're trying to win games here. Is he too flashy or does he dunk too hard? Gimme a break.

It is true that Francis' enthusiasm gets mistaken for I'm-from-the-hood-ism by the more so-conservative-I-look-like-an-oil-painting GMs, refs, and so on.

all of this just adds fuel to the fire for steve. WHEN we make the playoffs this year he will get the chance to shocase his skills while scoring 30 on his opponents one night and then dropping a triple/double the next.

So what if he was left off the World Championship roster. I'd rather see him rest his knees a little bit during the offseason. Also, of all the college players, why on earth did they select Nick Collison? I can think of at least a dozen players off the top of my head that are better than him. I think there may be some KU fans on the USA FIBA board.

I think Davis is better than Francis, Davis should be on the team, Francis shouldn't.

Not that it's a bad thing, but Francis is not the team player Davis is.

If we make the playoffs, and Francis averages at least 7.5 assists, be sure he will be on the USA roster next time.

now that he has more scoring options on his team, he can show what kind of player he really is.

Let's be fair now. You get assists credits when you pass to someone who then scores. Remember who Steve had to pass to last season?

    Cuttino Mobley .438
    Kenny Thomas .478
    Walt Williams .419
    Eddie Griffin .366
    Glen Rice .389
Kelvin Cato .583 All alley oops from Stevie and Cat
    Kevin Willis .440
    Oscar Torres .396
    Jason Collier .432
    Terence Morris .384
    Dan Langhi .392

Of the guys over 40%, Williams, Collier, Willis didn't see much playing time due to injuries or other issues. It's no wonder Cat and Stevie did most of the scoring!
