I just think high level FAs cost way more than they are worth...teams literally have a bidding war against each other and it just comes down to who wants to overspend the most. You can definitely find high level players via the draft...Rick Smith has shown that year after year. Cushing was arguably our best defender last season. I dont think its that we need high level players to fill out the remaining holes...we need good players that can get the job done and hold their own. We already have our big pieces, just need some smart decision making to round out the team.
Well, I'd be more apt to trading for a player than for signing him outright via free agency. If you look at the contracts for players that have been traded, they are much more reasonable than players that have been signed as free agents. Boldin's contract is a great example. Not only do the Ravens save money from the draft picks, but they also get a pretty good deal on a guy that is top notch. If you look at the money given to Peppers, Wilfork, Dunta, etc... Thats really money that we cant afford to give up, considering OD and Ryans have yet to be paid. We have our stars on offense and defense. At this point, we need to make efficient moves to complete the team. Solid FA signings (Boddin @ 5 million per) and smart draft choices will make this team into a contender next season. My only issue is going overboard for a FA, because that can cripple a team in the years to come. But I agree, you need to mix and match all the different avenues of bringing in players in order to field a winning squad.
I remember watching a Kubiak post game press conference and he answered a question about a defensive scheme. McClain then questioned Kubiak's answer with something like, "in that scheme, shouldn't the safety have this/that responsibility?" Kubiak responded with, "Now you're the expert on schemes?" There was a nice little laugh in the room and it shut McClain up pretty quickly. As far as Bodden, I would love to add a veteran CB rather than having to spend a high draft pick on one and possibly having a rookie/sophomore duo next season.
Here's a tidbit from LaCanfora, the guy who broke Bodden was visiting Houston today, says he believes its not down between us and the Patriots. I think we have the advantage since he's in town. http://www.examiner.com/x-778-Houst...ency-update--Whats-the-right-price-for-Bodden
I wasnt sure, so I looked it up...never been to the probowl. He got defensive player of the week after picking off Sanchez 3 times.
I don't think he ever made the Pro Bowl but he has been pretty solid throughout his career. According the National Football Post, Bodden was only burned 43 times on 87 defensive targets in 2009 (49.4%), while Dunta Robinson was burned 51 times on 83 targets (61.4%). If the Texans sign Bodden, the Texans cornerback position would be in good shape. I would imagine Leigh Bodden and Glover Quin would be the starters while Jacque Reeves and Brice McCain would be the nickle and dime backs. Antwaun Molden and Fred Bennett would be competing to make the team as the 5th DB. It would also give the Texans the opportunity to improve the other positions via the draft like defensive tackle, free safety, offensive line, and running back.
lol, I like how McCain keeps repeating that Bodden's price has come way down...as if thats the reason the Texans are all of a sudden interested.
Yea I read that and laughed. He is trying to cover his ass after he said the Texans weren't interested in Bodden.
Here is his twitter, should be very interesting to keep an eye on for the next couple of days while he's here in Houston. http://twitter.com/LeighBodden
I just sent him a message to sign with Houston, haha. I think if he gets enough replies about Houston, it can help...I noticed a lot of pats fans telling him to stay.
Ehhhh, I don't know about that. McClain is obviously no stranger to piling on the scoops of ice cream
from McClain Bodden and G Wade Smith are having dinner with Kubiak and coaches at a Houston restaurant. They'll spend Monday visiting at Reliant Stadium.
I don't know...is taking two different kinds of free agents into one restraunt with a coach kinda odd and a least bit awkward?
Well, one's an O-Lineman so he probably just cares about which restaurant they are going to and if the table plans on splitting the appetizer he plans on ordering just for himself as a warm up. But seriously, yea I was kind of thinking the same thing. I was reading into it as if both players are leading towards signing with the Texans and its more of a getting aquainted to your new teammate/coach kinda thing. Well that's what I'm hoping
