For anybody not living in The Lone Star State, we have one weekend per year in which there is no sales tax on clothing and shoes, to help out families a little bit when buying school clothes for their kids... Well, the malls were definitely not for the faint of heart this weekend. Did you go all out and break the bank during tax free weekend, or did you shack yourself in and avoid the crowds? All I got was a pair of sneakers, and my wife bought me a $3.00 shirt...(I'm glad I finally know how much she loves me )
About 600 dollars worth of stuff for school..... Hey, I only go shopping for clothes about once a year.
Absolutely nothing. I hate malls and clothing shopping in general and saving 8 bucks on every $100 isn't enough to motivate me.
Dropped about 200$ at Mervyn's. Several pants/shirts for my wife, I got 4 shirts and 4 khakis for work. A pretty good deal (Dockers and Haggar pants). Had a 10% of coupon and I got deferred billing until 2003.
a pint of soy milk, gallon of low calorie ice milk, and a pound of fuji apples... all items that are never taxed!
while i like shopping, I agree entirely on the motivation part. my wife and i were talking about that this weekend. i can't imagine braving the crowds that packed the malls and stores this weekend for that. i do, however, recognize that there are people to whom that does make a difference.
Amen... especially when you can save 10-20% nearly AND not have to pay taxes by buying online. Although I doubt I'd buy too many clothes online. Those of you looking for school supplies need to check out Staples, Office Depot, or Office Max online. They usually have a bunch of coupons as well as free shipping if you buy $50 worth of stuff. I wonder how many of these places jack up their prices in preparation for "tax free weekend"?
A pair of jean shorts, a polo shirt, and 10 boxers. Total was under $100; love that Lord & Taylor (they also had a "take off 50% on items already on sale" in addition to the tax-free weekend)!
I hit Wally World the day after Thanksgiving to get my son a Power Wheels Jeep. I waited from 6:00 to 6:30 am just to get into Wal Mart. I saw a lady get hit by a car...this guy was so anxious to get in to the parking lot. IT WAS CRAZY!!! I managed to get the last Jeep in the store and had to carry it across the store over my head because I couldn't move around the store with the cart. Tax free weekend was a walk in the park compared to that day!!!
Actually, Dillards at Highland Mall here in Austin cut a lot of their prices significantly. Most of what I bought was "spring collection" stuff they'd marked down to make room for the fall collection (LOL, like men give a **** about that). I bought business casual stuff (OK, fine, the rest of the world wins, I'll start dressing down). I got a $59 golf shirt for $17, as one example. So it was a pretty good deal overall. For what I spent, I got five shirts, three or four pairs of slacks, and two pairs of shoes, give or take. I hate the mall too, but I think it was cheaper to slog through it for 90 minutes yesterday afternoon w/out the sales tax, instead of paying shipping.
Oh man, I love Black Friday... I know it's a little sadistic, but I love walking around the mall the day after Thanksgiving, just being in the middle of a big event...Yeah, I know...I need to get a life My favorite thing to do on Black Friday, though, is to get to the mall REALLY early in order to get an excellent parking space. Stay there until the parking lot fills up. Then, slowly walk back to my truck and wait for a parking lot scavenger to try and get my space. Hang around my truck for a couple of minutes and just watch the scavanger wait there until I back out. Then, back my truck out a couple of feet, "change my mind" and get back into my space. Then, I walk back to the mall with a "Sorry, I forgot something!" look on my face and watch those lazy freaks scream and cuss at me as I walk back to the mall... You can do that all day if you time it right
About $300 worth of clothes(Through sales/coupons/Tax-Free), I probably saved at least $100-$120. Paid $60 for some regularly $75 Nike Running shoes.
Nothing. It isn't worth it to me to go to a crowded mall when I am only saving 8.25%, and I can go catch a Red Apple sale or something and save 30% or more.
Anyone notice that they put odd things on the tax free list.. i thought it was supposed to be a back to school thing... i found the following amusing.... Backpacks are NOT tax free however hunting vests are????
As pointed out earlier, those two things aren't mutually exclusive. I added the 8.25 % savings on top of some serious sales from Dillards.
