I'm sorry but this is no freaking scrimmage. Maybe next year it will be a scrimmage, and no one will care, but this is the first scrimmage in Texans history and the first opportunity to see the Texans on the field against an NFL opponent.
From the DMN: How much will the Cowboys see of Texans rookie quarterback David Carr , the top overall pick of last April's draft? Linebacker Dexter Coakley thinks the glimpses will be brief during the scrimmage. "Obviously, that's their franchise player and they're going to be smart with him," Coakley said. "He's going to get some reps in 7-on-7 drills. But once we go live for inside drills, I doubt he'll be in there." Portions will be like flag football, but there will be real hitting
Yes, a fight!!! McKinney and a player from the Cowboys have been ejected. The Cowboys are such b!tches. They came out looking to take Carr's head off. I really feel bad for Carr. It's going to be a long long season.
eh...this scrimmage largely sucked. The one thing that I got semi-excited about was the long pass over the middle by Carr where the receiver got hit by the corner and hurt the guy. That was funny, since the tackler was the one trying to make the hard hit.
Yeah, I agree on both counts. Hutchison looked better, but just because he was a bit smoother on his passes. Hutchison still was not all that impressive. That long pass he made that almost scored the touchdown was more the receiver making a hell of a catch on a very short thrown pass than Hutchison putting the ball where it was supposed to be.
That was McKinney's last planned play of the night and he knew it so he really didn't care what happened...he said as much after the game. I'm glad the Cowboys went after Carr...the sooner he gets used it the better. I really don't think they were "looking to take his head off" since the qb's were off limits as far as hits were concerned. os
Old School, imo the fight started because the Cowboys were a little too aggressive during the first series. Technically the QB's were "off limits" however a couple of Cowboys (Dat Nguyen for one) nearly knocked Carr off his feet. Afterwards, Nguyen put his hands up like he didn't do anything with a big grin on his face. It might have been frustration on McKinney's part watching the Cowboys put a little extra in their tackling of Allen. It did not look good for the Texans at all tonight. Hopefully we will have a better showing Monday night.
Thursday, August 1 Updated: August 2, 11:44 PM ET QB defends his center, to chagrin of others Associated Press HOUSTON -- The expansion Houston Texans added another historic note to old Robertson Stadium on Friday night with their first scrimmage against the Dallas Cowboys. ''It seems like everything we do is a first,'' Texans coach Dom Capers said. They also recorded the first fight between the two Texas teams to help build their budding rivalry. Early in an 11-on-11 drill, Texans center Steve McKinney and Cowboys defensive tackle John Nix tangled after rookie quarterback David Carr completed a pass. To the dismay of his coaches and teammates, Carr jumped into the fray, too. ''I told David if I ever saw him do that again, I would clothesline him and carry him to the sideline,'' said running back Jonathan Wells. ''We don't need our quarterback out there mixing it up on the ground.'' Carr said he couldn't help jumping in. ''Well, you see your center on the ground and somebody on top of him and you step in to help,'' Carr said. ''It just shows you how far we've come as a team.'' McKinney said he was upset that the Cowboys were tricking up a basic scrimmage. ''I'm not going to get pushed around by the Dallas Cowboys or anybody else,'' McKinney said. ''They definitely were not playing vanilla defense. They were moving around and they were coming.'' It was a spicy moment in the daylong workouts. The teams held a combined workout Friday morning at the Texans' lush practice facility then moved over to Robertson, formerly called Jeppesen Stadium. It was the site of the 1962 American Football League championship game between the Houston Oilers and Dallas Texans. A sellout crowd of 27,536 started showing up for tailgating at 3:30 p.m., well in advance of the 7 p.m. start of the drills. They were disappointed if they expected to see much of Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith or Carr, the No. 1 choice in the April draft. Smith didn't participate in the scrimmage, and Carr left after the first series. Carr's first pass was batted back in his face on the first play of an 11-on-11 drill by blitzing Darren Woodson. Carr later drew cheers for a completion over the middle to tight end Billy Miller. http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/2002/0725/1410128.html
I'm glad the Cowboys brought the blitz...it seems kinda goofy for them to do so in a freaking scrimmage, but that's just fine. The more Carr sees it, the more prepared he'll be for it. Don't judge the Texans 2002 squad from a scrimmage, fellas. There's not a whole lot you can take away from it. I will say I'm mildly impressed with the fact our 1st team defense did not take the field against the Cowboys first team offense, and the Cowboys had a hard time moving the ball (and never scored) against our second unit. The fight is a good thing...builds team. But Carr needs to avoid those fights at all costs! There's something about Carr...something about his body language and the way he responds to things...I think the guy is a winner. There's just a look about him and the way he carries himself. He seems to be someone who will be easy to root for, and might help to earn Texans fans across the country.
Although there is probably another thread for this, this will probably be ok. Did anybody stay at the hotel the Cowboy's were at? I was and it was really cool. We got there about 2 or 3 on Friday and my two cousins, my friend and I were going to look for Cowboys. We didn't really expect to find any though. When we were going down an elevator, the sp. teams coach walked in. I forgot his name, but if you seen him you know he looks mean. He was right in front of us and we were trying to hold in the laughs. We got off where he did, which was the training area. He walked in and we busted out laughing. We couldn't even talk to him! We the followed where he went but he was talking to someone so we went out to the pool. I didn't get a good look but I think it was Jerry Jones. We also were in the elevator with guys like Larry Allen, Greg Ellis, and Peppi Zellner. (SP?) My friend also saw Campo in an elevator as it closed. It really freaked him out. Sadly, we never could get the nerve up to ask any of them for anything, let alone an autograph. (I had a pen and paper in my pockets.) I also saw a lot of Hard Knocks crew. I know, no pictures, it didn't happend. So did anybody else experience this?
