next year with Yao back and who every we have on the team next season, I doubt both of them will be averaging 40ppg combined.

Agree. If Martin and Brooks continue to mesh we got ourselves something special here. Let's hope that Morey doesn't trade Brooks to get Bosh in a sign and trade or something like that.

Sidenote, can't wait till Lowry gets back so we can have that change of pace that makes our PG combo so dangerous. I also miss having a good defender at the PG spot! Brooks needs to take some Battier classes in that department.

BTW has anybody thought about Ariza since the Brooks-Martin tandem started rolling? I didn't think so. Does he move to starting SF or does he go to the bench? He might put his angry face on if he gets taken out of the starting 5.

Yao is going to take a big load of shots next season.

I predict Brooks to be a 15ppg guy and Martin 21ppg.

Yao maybe the who sacrifices some touches next year. The Nba is very guard oriented now.

I would not be shocked if Yao is limited to about 30 minutes a game and puts up 16 and 10 his first regular season back. They should work him in slowly to get him through the regular season, then when its playoff time crank up the minutes.

I hope they score less than they could because someone else steps up too, and we win more. Who cares how much they score? Clearly they could score more than 50% of our points on any given night, isn't that enough?

Brooks and Martin backcourt might rank highest amongst other backcourt combinations in Rocket history in terms of PPG, but they will also rank highest amongst other rocket backcourt combination in terms of opposing team PPG allowed.

No help defense.....got to give them some size to protect the cup and that will settle down.

Then here's to hoping Ariza is the defensive player we can rely on.

Not what I am talking about...we need size at the bigs.....length and size, and intimidation.

Someone to protect the rim....not Trevor or Shane....

I actually disagree a bit here. I think you need an athletic power forward to match up with other teams at times, as well as run out ahead or be a bit more mobile than Yao. Also to help with rebounding.

But in terms of Defense...I disagree. When you have Yao in the paint, what it does it allows Brooks and Martin and other guards to play there men tighter...since even if they get beat off the dribble there's the big guy to block shots.

What you need to complement that is exactly like a guy like Battier...someone who help defends...not only in picking up the guy that beat the guard, but also picking up the flanks in the paint when Yao steps up to defend against penetration. Battier is very good at moving around and blocking those passing lanes. An athletic power forward helps on missed shots, but on penetration, guys like Battier are the perfect guy next to Yao.

Every team has defensive liabilities somewhere. Personally, id rather have them at the 1 & 2 than in the middle.

They will exceed 43 easily this season. Next season will be totally different. With Yao in the mix, efficiency will definitely goes up. But I think total points production will drop due to the drop of pace. Hence 35ppg next season will be my prediction.

The 40+ppg potential of our backcourt made me realize that Morey has constructed a very flexible team that allows Adelman to counter many teams' strategies.
For example, if we play a high octane offense like PHX or GSW and our coaching staff opts to put our best offensive unit on the floor:
    Yao/Scola/Bud/Martin/Brooks.

On the other hand, if we decide to lockdown on a team we can go:
    Yao/Hayes/Battier/Ariza/Lowry.

Conversely, we can go with size or speed at every position depending on matchups.

Obviously, this all depends on whether Yao (the anchor of both the offense and defense) can come back and maintain his previous efficiency and lately-discovered playoff intensity.

This, my fellow ROX fans, is a true indicator of an elite team (ala spurs of early decade when they could outscore the #1 offensive team like PHX and outlast halfcourt defensive teams like CLE).

Yao doesn't really get to take that many shots. He took 13 a game last year, less during playoffs. Landry took 10 a game this year for reference. Ariza takes 15 a game. There's plenty to move to give to Yao.

I believe the most productive this duo will be offensively is this season. They're already averaging close to 40 points a game (I picked 38 because I thought it would be closer to this number). Next year, when Yao comes back, he'll have a lot more touches. Brooks should defer to Yao, and thus his scoring numbers will go down. This is unless Lowry starts and Brooks takes on a 6th man role coming off the bench (ala Bobby Jackson). I actually see this as preferable, because in the past Brooks had a hard time giving Yao the ball (bounce passes, etc).

The duo of Martin and Brooks does work well when they can get going offensively, but we'd be giving up a lot on the defensive end. Only time will tell if a defensive anchor like Yao can make it work. We'll have to do a better job of rotating so Yao doesn't have to step out of the paint. We need him in the paint to protect the basket. Both Martin and Brooks are quick and can stay in front of their man, but they're going to be mismatched against guards who can post them up.

Next year, I predict that Kevin Martin will have the highest PPG average, followed by Yao, and then Brooks. This is good because Martin is very good at translating fouls into points at the charity stripe. Combine that together with Yao's fourth quarter scoring, and it will be a formidable duo.

I know that Morey will try to do a sign-and-trade to get a significant free agent here over the summer. It's difficult to figure out what our rotation will be like because people will definitely be moving, but I'll give it a shot.

    Yao
    Scola
    Ariza
    Martin
    Lowry

    Hayes/Andersen
    Hayes/Hill/Jeffries
    Budinger
    Battier/Taylor
    Brooks

    1st Round Pick
    2nd Round Pick

This is of course assuming we resign Hayes, don't trade Battier. Don't resign Armstrong, and keep our draft picks. I think we will see Andersen getting significantly less playing time because his role is to stretch out the defense, and Yao is a much better shooter in that regard. Hayes will sub in when the team needs to play small ball, and his offensive woes will be mitigated by the tandem team of Brooks/Martin. Hopefully Hill will develop over the summer and be the guy we need at the 4.

I'm really excited for the up-coming year because of all the pieces we have. Budinger is an excellent player and a great pickup from the 2nd round. We'll have to wait until summer to see what Morey can cook up for us.

Yao is going to commit a lot of fouls trying to clean up after Brooks/Martin.
