Though it might not be immediately apparent I think the Big Dog trade could really end up benefiting the Rockets and other teams on the lookout for backup swingmen. By picking up Big Dog, Atlanta have stacked their frontcourt - thought it is now without a doubt the best frontcourt in the East - which conceivably could result in more trades or free-agent signings. As it stands Atlanta's roster is: C Ratliff, Mohammed, Henderson PF Abdur-Rahim, Crawford, Strickland SF Robinson, Dermarr Johnson SG Newble, Glover PG Terry, Dickau, E. Davis If Atlanta decide that Dickau is good enough to take over the point and that JT is better suited to the 2-guard, the Hawks are left with a semi-logjam at the 2 spot: SF Robinson, Dermarr Johnson SG Terry, Newble, Glover PG Dickau, E. Davis Last season Dermarr Johnson, Ira Newble and Dion Glover all started a solid number of games: 46 games, 35 games and 25 games respectively. This season, all are good enough to start. Plus with the addition of Big Dog, Atlanta's payroll got a whole lot bigger. Ignoring JT who is most probably untouchable in the eyes of the Hawks, one of those players most probably will have to go both for the personnel/rotation reason as well as the financial issues. Of the 3 players, only Newble is a free-agent. Both Johnson and Glover are still on their rookie contracts I believe. Though all three IMO are good enough to start, they would all most probably be willing to also come off the bench, but still play significant minutes. The Rockets' well-documented need is a big 2-guard that plays defence. Of the three Newble is a defensive specialist, Glover is decent and Johnson has potential. Newble however can't shoot the 3-ball, while Glover and Johnson are competent. Johnson is really more of a 3 than a 2. Some stats: Ira Newble (6'7) 30.3mpg, 8.0ppg, 5.3rpg, 1.1apg, 0.9spg Dion Glover (6'5) 21mpg, 8.1ppg, 3.1rpg, 1.5apg, 0.82spg Dermarr Johnson (6'9) 24.0mpg, 8.4ppg, 3.4rpg, 1.1apg, 0.86spg I would obviously prefer Newble but it may not be possible. In that case a sign-and-trade could possibly be worked out . Perhaps Mo Taylor or KT for Glover or Johnson. That would fix the Rocket's logjam at the 4 and the Hawks' logjam at the 2.
Glover is a nice player but i don't think the rockets would really need any of those guys. We already have enough prospects to deal with.
I don't think any of them would be too happy coming to Houston where they would have to fight for minutes. They are looking for a place to become a legit star in the league and at this stage in their carreers, they probably care more about their stats than the winning. I think we should go for a veteran who has had his time in the spotlight and is ready to win, regardless of the playing time he gets.
I am not familure with any of those three, and therfore my rose colored glasses say either KT, who I like of MoT, who I don't is too much to give up. Still, a well though out post Juice.
Would you have traded Glen Rice for Glenn Robinson, knowing that Milwaukee was looking to trade for someone in the last year of their contract? Giving us a superb scoring option at the three. Our starting line up would have looked as follows: C- Yao Ming PF- Mo Taylor SF- Glenn Robinson SG- Cuttino Mobley PG- Steve Francis That's a whole lot of offense. But I don't think it would be any worse than having Glen Rice start. What do you guys think?
i think we should find a way to get rid of collier and langhi should we say Collier, Langhi, Future Pick for Dermarr Johnson this would probaly be impossible but nice
Won't happen. Atlanta has already decided Terry is better at the 1. He and Dickau will rarely be on the court at the same time. Also, they are kind of fed up with Dermarr...unless he really lights a fire in his belly, he will be gone one way or another. Oh, and Glover will probably start at the 2.
rimmy needs a new name. Seems to be trendy about now. I'm thinking either lilDickau or TerryIsPGnotSG.
i cant say that i have seen newble play. he sounds good but i think we could do better. :::cough:::raja bell:::cough:::
Newble is a very good player. He and Corey Brewer lead the Oklahoma Storm to the USBL Championship. I would be very happy to see him sign with the Rockets.
From what I've heard Glover is a Grade-A pr!ck. And Johnson isn't much better. We don't need anymore attitudes or egos on the team. Unless we traded one problem child for another.
Since Newble is a free-agent and unrestricted at that, he would be the easiest to pick up. He's a player with good size and a defensive specialist, and does decently on the offensive end as well. Last season he split his minutes mostly between the 2 and the 3 and that's what I'd like to see if the Rocks were to pick him up. I know alot of people are optimistic about Nachbar, but chances are he like Peja, Hedo, and other Euros will probably struggle to immediately adapt to both the NBA game and schedule. I wouldn't imagine Nachbar playing too many minutes - perhaps 10-15mpg - much less starting. Newble would be a good pickup to shore up the 3-spot, in addition to handling the backup minutes at the 2. Rice would probably start ahead at SF, but Newble would still likely end up with his 25-30mpg. C Cato, Yao Ming PF Taylor, Griffin, KT SF Rice, Morris, Nachbar SG Mobley, Newble PG Francis, Norris I haven't heard or read anything bad being said about Glover and his attitude, though by all reports the Hawks are getting frustrated and fed up with Johnson's slow progress and slacker approach especially as a former number-six draft pick. I've heard Glover is being looked at by other teams.
To be more specific, I've heard that Glover cries a lot about a lack of playing time. Funny thing is that when he did start, the Hawks and Glover played horribly.
Not exactly true. He played poorly as the starting 2, but at the 3 his numbers accross the board were much better (including FG% & 3p%). Not that that matters with Robinson in the fold at the 3. Regardless, after Summer league play, the Hawks are expecting Glover to start at the 2. I have heard nothing about a negative attitude, so i cannot comment about it. They like him more than Dermarr, though.
. Well SOMEONE has to play the 2, if Terry is considered the PG... Glover plays like a PF in a SG's body. A poor man's Bonzi Wells.
Glover probably will get the first shot at the 2, and when he does he will be sending Newble and Johnson to the bench. Both Newble and Johnson started more games, and played more minutes than Glover. Terry is also sure to get some minutes at the 2, when Dickau takes over the point. I can't imagine either Newble or Johnson would be too happy with a situation like that, particularly Newble who pretty much had a breakout season. Hawks will probably end up losing one of Glover, Newble or Johnson, most likely whether they want to or not.
The Hawks - to this point - have said that Terry and Dickau will not spend much time together on the court. When Dickau comes in, it will mostly just be to give Terry a rest. As far as one of the three going...my money is on Dermarr and the Hawks won't really care...unless he comes back to haunt them.
Yeah but Dickau has impressed the Hawks with his preseason play so I would expect a Dickau-Terry backcourt to occaisionally be given a run. Dickau isn't some raw, green high schooler, he did do his four years of college. The obvious problem with a Dickau-Terry backcourt is its size - and its defence or lack thereof - I think the Hawks would give it a shot though, especially if they do play some zone, and with a healthy Ratliff waiting behind to erase any mistakes, why not? I agree on the Dermarr issue, the Hawks from what I've heard are ready to cut their losses with Johnson, though honestly nobody really wants him.
