GURU of Gangstarr [update 3/2/10] if you're a fan of rap music you will be saddened to know the following http://www.allhiphop.com/stories/news/archive/2010/03/01/22137336.aspx AllHipHop News) DJ Premier of Gangstarr has confirmed reports that his partner guru suffered a massive heart attack in New York City over the weekend. Guru was left in a coma as a result of the massive heart attack. According to DJ Premier, Guru is slated to undergo surgery in New York today (March 1st). DJ Premier confirmed the reports of Guru’s heart attack last night on his Hip-Hop Nation radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio. As a member of Gangstarr, Guru delivered vocals for classic albums like No More Mr. Nice Guy (1989), Step in the Arena (1991), Daily Operation (1992), Hard to Earn (1994), Moment of Truth (1998) and The Ownerz (2003). The rapper rhymed over 160 of DJ Premier’s productions throughout the course of his career, before launching his own record label 7 Grand in 2004 to continue releasing his legendary series of Jazzmatazz albums. In an exclusive statement to AllHipHop.com, Brownman - the featured trumpet soloist for Guru's Jazzmatazz albums, stated: "After touring the globe standing next to Guru on stage for the last 3 years, I can't imagine a world without Bald Head Slick". The Trinidadian-born, New York trained jazz trumpet player was handpicked by Guru to replace Donald Byrd on Jazzmatazz and appears on Jazzmatazz Vol. 4 (featured on "Universal Struggle"). Guru's most recent release was Guru 8.0: Lost & Found, which was released in May of 2009.
This is freaking tragic is there any hope he gets better? I was just talking about Guru like 3 days ago in the "best rappers in the game" thread. For the past year or so, Moment of Truth has been the only CD I listen to in my car. Thoughts and prayers go out to guru, hope he gets better and goes back to making the best records ever. Greatest rapper of all time IMO
Damn, that really sucks. I hope he can pull through, but that doesn't sound good. His Jazzmatazz series of records is classic stuff.
I hate fake emcees who always act hard but won't walk the streets without their body guards my favorite Gangstarr Album: Moment of Truth, follwowed by Daily Operation. Daily Operation gets love because that came out my senior year The favorite Jazzmatzz is Vol 2
I know a lot of people prefer Dr Dre, but Premier to me is the best DJ of allllll tiiiiiiiimeeeee plus he was born in H Town
Dre definitely has flashier beats, so I see how Dre has more of a reputation than him. but man Primo produced the sickest most wicked tracks I have ever heard. Track 12 off of Moment of Truth "what I'm here 4" is the best beat I have ever heard. Of course, those beats mean absolutely NOTHING without the most intelligent and smooth lyricist of all time rapping to them. Exquisite exotic exciting type $h!t enough to make the real heads wake up and get hyped quick I'm type slick, known as the god universal kick rhymes without rehearsal, I cross the burning sands now I stand here with virtue, of course I can hurt you SIMPLY WITH MY POINT OF VIEW! and I knew that many would come that's why I've chosen to cut off pathways and there's no runways or doorways open to the jokers who aint focused and all the fake mercenaries get buried by the tongue of terrifying fury get well Keith Elam!
He was born in Houston? I had no idea. But yeah Dre is definitely in the top three but Premier don't even have a number. He is just at the top looking down on everybody else.

a strange twist apparently guru has been in the hospital for over a month http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.10758/title.gurus-nephew-speaks-on-gurus-health-and-solar
very sad. here is his farewell letter: I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options. I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting. My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody’s feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own. I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life. http://www.ballerstatus.com/2010/04/20/guru-dies-after-long-battle-with-cancer-report/
