Cavs just announced Shaq will need thumb surgery Monday. No timetable for his return has been established yet. Good thing Z is coming back

RT @PDcavsinsider: It basically means his regular season is probably over.

Shaq will undergo thumb surgery in Baltimore on Monday, Cavs say. No timetable for a return.

How do you think this affects Cleveland's chances?

I was reading somewhere that he could be out 6-8 weeks if he has surgery.

Seems like it might make Big Z coming back look more legit. Still think they will need Shaq some in the playoffs, especially against Howard.

I saw something early this morning that it didn't look good for him at all. Shaq ruined their chemistry on both ends quite a bit, but they could use his bulk against the Magic and Lakers in the playoffs.

I think the Cavs will finish the season just fine without Shaq. He killed their defensive rotations and cohesion on offense. But it's all about the playoffs and keeping LeBron happy.

As long as he is back by the 2nd round. They really only need him for Orlando and LA.

Point A) No way this team was gonna beat LA first of all.
Point B) Youre a pro, suck it and play with a broken finger like Kobe and Kurt Warner, Warner did it during his 1st superbowl season!
Point C) Shaq you're a legend, I respect you, hope you get well soon

It would be funny if he had the surgery and then came back and all of a sudden he could shoot free throws.

A broken finger is something that can be played through, but a broken thumb is an entirely different situation all together. The thumb is the prime mover on the hand. You can't grip a basketball without using your thumb, or exert fine motor control. Also, injuries to the thumb can be touchy because the nerve that controls your hand (the radial nerve, I believe?) is located in your thumb. You damage that nerve and you can cripple the entire hand. So while it sounds minor, thumb injuries are no joke. Ask Kurt Warner - he wasn't right for a couple of seasons (2003-05) after he hurt his thumb in the season opener against the Giants.

As people are saying, and if you watch Cav's games, they only need Shaq for LA and Orlando. With JJ Hickson getting better each game, Powe coming back and Jamison playing well, they don't need him until playoffs.

He hadn't taken his annual (fall/winter) vacation, yet so. It was kind of expected.

After thumb surgery on Monday, Shaquille O'Neal and Cavs are told he'll miss 6-to-8 weeks, a source close to center tells Y! Sports.

The Cavs won't announce a timetable until after Shaq's thumb surgery, but source says doctors expect him back late April/early May.

If Shaq doesn't come back until early May, he won't be worth a dime against either the Magic or the Lakers. A guy like him can't sit out 2 months and return with any kind of form or timing.

That's what I was thinking. Idunno, Shaq does seem to be a chemistry killer, but he serves a purpose, and I think they'll be hurting without him (or with him at less than 100%).
