    CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Michael Jordan has struck a deal to buy controlling interest of the Charlotte Bobcats, putting the former NBA superstar in charge of the money-losing team in his home state.

Traci Blunt, a spokeswoman for owner Bob Johnson, told The Associated Press that Jordan was able to put together an ownership group late Friday to buy the team he has been a part-owner of since 2006. Jordan has been running the team's basketball operations.

The purchase price and details of Jordan's ownership group -- called MJ Basketball Holdings LLC -- weren't immediately available. Blunt said Johnson would have no further comment.

Former Houston Rockets executive George Postolos also bid on the Bobcats and didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.

NBA commissioner David Stern announced at All-Star weekend that a deal was imminent, but the league's owners must still approve the purchase.

It will end Johnson's stint as the first black majority owner of a major professional sports team, while giving Hall of Famer Jordan a new venture.Jordan won six NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls and has made millions selling sneakers, apparel and other items. Now he'll begin a completely different role trying to make the Bobcats a winner, and the franchise and Charlotte's downtown arena profitable.

After paying $300 million for the expansion franchise that began play in 2004-05, Johnson has lost tens of millions of dollars each season as the Bobcats have struggled to draw fans and find sponsorships.

Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, recruited Jordan to be a minority investor and gave him the final say on all basketball decisions.

Jordan has had a unique role with the Bobcats. While he has run the basketball operations, he's not officially a team employee and rarely attends practices or games, or does work on the marketing side of the operation.

Jordan has had some missteps -- drafting the disappointing Adam Morrison No. 3 overall in 2006 -- but he was also able to lure Hall of Famer Larry Brown to become coach at the beginning of last season.

Jordan and Brown have made seven trades involving 21 players since the start of last season. The November acquisition of Stephen Jackson from Golden State has helped Charlotte get into playoff contention in the Eastern Conference.

This is exciting. Hopefully MJ will be able to get the Charlotte community to support the team, which would increase their income and allow them to be more competitive. When it came to marketing the team to fans, Johnson might have been the worst owner in the NBA.

One thing MJ MUST do is hire the right guy to run day-to-day operations and a good GM for the basketball side. I hope hope he succeeds in turning the franchise around.

It would be funny if he gets too involved with the GM's job. The guy is almost the opposite of Isaiah when it comes to judging talent.

One of the richest and most successful Afro-American businessmen in the country Bob Johnson gets tired of losing millions of dollars every year with his toy the Bobcats and Michael Jordan thinks he can do better. I would have looked at it like caveat emptor "let the buyer beware" and not invested a dime extra into that money pit.

Unfortunately, I think this venture is destined for failure.

Jordan went down to the deadline with his purchase option/right of first refusal, largely because he was trying to organize a group of investors with enough cash that he wouldn't have to put much of his own money into buying the team. That CANNOT be a good sign for things to come. What happens when the Bobcats start losing serious money the next two years? I'll tell you what. He'll start slashing payroll. The front office will be gutted further, the scouting department marginalized. In the end, the Bobcats will probably be the laughing stock of the NBA.

I liked "MJ The Player" as much as the next guy, but "MJ The Executive" has been, and likely will continue to be, a complete and utter failure.

A highly risky move especially in light of the economic downturn. MJ doesn't seem to have a plan for the Bobcats. He might go broke with this venture.

Donald Trump taught us one thing: being as a successful businessman translates to jack-squat in the sports world.

On the other hand, Jordan drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison? Seriously? Wtf?

And this is why the other 29 teams in the NBA are probably quite happy with this development.

Looks like that MJ has learned his lesson after the Wizards ordeal. It's good for the NBA that Jordan is still involved with the league.

Uh yeah probably. Most of us actually think he's just incompetent at scouting talent. From reports it doesn't seem like MJ was flat-out stupid, but that he was lazy. He never put in the work to study players, which is why he always seems to make bad draft choices (i.e. Kwame Brown looks ripped, let's get him! Adam Morrison is a scorer who's been compared to Larry, let's get him! Brook Lopez ended up in our lap and we need a C but Larry Brown's pushing for that pg, let's get him!). At any rate he messed up the Cat's cap so bad, its poetic justice he ended up buying the team. Never should have fired Bernie Bickerstaff

honestly, if done right, its a pretty good investment. Back when they had the Hornets, Charlotte had a top 5 fanbase in the league when it came to support and crowd noise. They were what the Kings were in the early part of the 2000s. Add to that, other than the Magic...they had pound for pound the best marketing group of any small market team in the league. People around the nation were actually big Hornets fans.

I think what Mike has to do on the marketing side is connect the team with his aura and his success. A name change from Charlotte to Carolina would do wonders. I would also change the team name and colors. Maybe "Flight" or something. You bite off the "tarheels" pie by calling the team Carolina and it gives you some of that college big name feel in a small market.

Also, MJ has to try his best to stay away from the team on a personnel standpoint. Keep a big name coach in the seat, but be recognized only as an owner. Be seen smoking a cigar in the press box every once in a while, but that's about it. A guy like Larry Brown is the perfect coach because once again, it reinforces the team being legit by his association with the tarheels.

You start off the 10-11 season with all this plus a little postseason success from this season, and I can see a big bandwagon of support.

I'd love to see it. He could still play but only for like 20 mins a game or less.

Jordan can turn around the franchise if he really tries. The Charlotte fanbase is as good any team in the league.
