Without Landry, expect Rockets to be worst finishing team at the rim

HoopData shows FG% by shot distance for teams and players:

    http://hoopdata.com/teamshotlocs.aspx

Right now, the Rockets are second to last in FG% at the rim at 56.3% (just ahead of Milwauke). Landry was their best finisher when he was with the team. Excluding his shots, the Rockets as a team shoot only 53.8% at the rim, which would be by far the worst in the league.

Replacing him with the likes of David Andersen and Jared Jeffries does not figure to make things any better.

How about Kevin Martin, the new addition?

    http://www.hoopdata.com/player.aspx?name=Kevin Martin

Last 2 seasons with Sacramento, a total of 73 games, Martin shoots only 54% on shots at the rim. Down from 65% and 61% in 06/07 and 07/08. Shooting guards, on average, shoot 60% at the rim this year.

One thing I've noticed with Martin in these first few games is that, despite his quick first step, he settles a lot for the pull-up jumper. He does have a knack for drawing fouls, but I attribute this more to his very quick first step rather than him being an aggressive attacker. Just my first impressions.

We were also 2nd to last last season. We just suck around the rim period.

Read the thread, not just the title. durvasa is far from some drama queen -- he's providing actual numbers and stats.

Chill out man; the new guys haven't even attended a formal practice yet. After the two before we play the Magic and the game itself, then we can judge what we got into.

Title definitely threw me off. When I saw who started the thread I expected some detailed analysis (with stats included) that projected the Rockets to only win six games or so for the rest of the season.

Luckily, I read the rest and realized it was about finishing at the rim and my depression lessened significantly.

Hopefully a couple of the new long guys can help out with this...otherwise we wait till Yao gets back next year.

After submitting the thread, I realized that the title was not a very good one. Sorry about that.

Makes sense, Landry in the interior looked to dunk in traffic. He was the only Rocket that could elevate and finish over his defender.
While Scola has a skilled post game he's not as effective in traffic. We lost a true inside finisher.

Kind of a long title, but I'll go with:

Without Landry, expect Rockets to be worst finishing team at the rim

    Thanks.

Landry's presence was missed terribly today. Hopefully lowry can change a lot of whats been going on

I thought it meant that we would be terrible at finishing games. In my opinion, this is going to be a huge issue going forward. Landry used to be our go to guy in the clutch. Who is it going to be now?

Martin? He's more of a finisher. He doesn't create so much as he thrives off the defense shifting due to another player breaking down his man.

Brooks is too erratic and too small.

    Ariza is...nevermind.

Scola will be swallowed up by swarming defenses late in games.

It's going to really frustrating to watch this team in late game situations when the game is on the line.

Don't worry about it. I read what you posted and then the title made sense. I just a little scared for a second.

Wow didn't expect the rockets to suck this much. I knew Landry being gone is a huge loss. The guy basically scored instantly from garbage points and didnt need much time to score. He didnt even need any plays given to him...he did it all himself from offensive rebounds or even making quick buckets. Scola is the only guy now and he apparently can't score at landry's rate nor can he do the garbage work. We ran our offense decently because landry was here...now they can't get anymore easy buckets. Martin will be doubled if he gets hot..and his defense makes rocekts defense suck for some reason.
Rockes seemed disorganized on both ends..when landry was here the defense was good in the majority of the game and the offense was consistent. With martin playing they seem very disorganized. And losing landry is a big deal..not many bigs can score instantly like him with his shooting percentage

should've kept landry. i would've rather the rockets just do the Tmac trade with the Knicks and not trade Carl right now. i'm just hoping this guy kevin martin will start putting up soon. maybe I'll change my mind later if he can go back to playing like he did the last 3 year cause this year he hasn't been playing that good. Think it's his worst year statistically or one of his worst. crossing my fingers that his dude can come back to his old form or maybe this is what he is...
