With all the rumors flying around here about Randy "one-year wonder" Winn, I thought I'd chime in my 2 cents. It appears that Montreal has given up once again, and is dumping players for prospects. The only untradeable player is Guerrero. That means Bartolo Colon can be had by 3PM today at the right price. Colon's on my fantasy team, and he's been damn near unhittable this year. He's 14-5 with a 2.62 ERA, and thrown 7 complete games this year, which is unheard of. We could sweep alot of teams with a three man rotation of Colon, Oswalt, and Miller. Saarloos and Mlicki can be the 4th and 5th guys when needed. It will probably take two pitchers and a hitting prospect to get this deal done. So why not trade some pitching prospects, and say Adam Everett, to get this deal done. Montreal can't afford to pay his contract in US Dollars.
2 factors point to "no". 1. Drayton McLane Jr. 2. Strike I wish I had a link to an article that Lopez wrote on McLane a few weeks back.......
Taking into consideration that the Expos gave up Brandon Phillips to get Colon, I am thinking that what they would ask for in return would be more than I would be willing to give, if I were Hunsicker.
I'd at least make an offer if I were the Astros brass. In fact, I'd make several offers. Colon would be a fantastic pickup.
Colon is the ultimate workhorse on the mound. He has power and stamina. A three man rotation of Oswalt, Miller, and Colon makes me happy.
It would be nice, but get real it is not going to happen. I would givr them Ward, Redding, and Everett and another player from the Minors.
This thread might as well have been called, "Astros need Randy Johnson" becuase we've got about the same chance of getting him (or Maddux, Schilling, Clemens...). Colon is a STUD by all means. He hits 98 mph in the late innings and he just eats up innings all year. He's a great pitcher, relatively cheap, pretty young, and he'd look great with Oswalt and Miller. McLane is too cheap and we'd have to give up our whole farm system to get him without giving up Oswalt or Miller or Saarloos. For now, we'll just have to do what I did... trade him to my Playstation Astros team ASAP.
Why is it that it always comes down to Drayton being cheap with you guys? I'm not saying that I feel sorry for him or am his biggest fan, but honestly. Colon is a reasonably priced talent, and I think Drayton would go for it under the right circumstances. Perhaps the Expos wanted something we're not willing to part with (ie Saarloos). We'll never know...
Refman, for as much as you get on me for saying Alomar is better than Biggio, you sure do defend Drayton like he is family to you.
Good point rezdawg...good point. It just is frustrating because when the team is down it is easy to just pile on Drayton. People don't even look at the circumstances of how we lost players, etc...they just see that they're not here and BAM quantum leap of logic...Drayton's cheap.
Alright, enough of these discussions. The Astros game started. I will be back in 3 hours or inbetween innings. GO 'STROS!!!
I guess we all know why rezdawg didn't come back to post between innings... all I have to say is OUCH! Oh yeah... and if Saarloos is all it took to get Colon, we'd have him YESTERDAY!
Not true. The Astros brass isn't likely to agree to trade Saarloos. He's a talented young pitcher who won't be arbitration eligible for like 4 or 5 years. Too valuable to trade right now.
I think the pitching staff is fine the way it is. Despite last game's debacle, the Astros still boast a 5 deep quality starting rotation IMO. The only player I'd hope the Astros to consider is Fernando Tatis (if he can clear waivers). Other than 3rd base, I don't believe the Astros have any glaring weaknesses. Though Geoff Blum has been playing very well, I think the Astros still need a right-handd power hitting 3rd baseman (especially if Orlando Merced has officially taken over a spot in the starting outfield). Another arm in the bullpen wouldn't hurt either if a proven reliever can be had.
