I watched the clock tick down on another site and they say the dealing is over. I was wondering if anyone has heard of an 11th hour thing going on with the 'Stros or is it over with no deals being made? I was hoping for Livan Hernandez (I'm a Cuban-American so I root for the guy) or Randy Winn, but we'll see how it shakes out? How does everyone feel about a deal (probably) not getting done?
Well, I was hoping for Winn. It looks like no trades went through. Oh well, no time to shake our heads. Its time to go with what we got and make a strong push towards the playoffs.
Just like the NBA, deals can be announced late into the night....if nothing happens by midnight, then it's probably safe to say that nothing's happened. In any case, there were only two deals today...involving Steve Reed and Alex Ochoa. Nothing noteworthy or groundbreaking.
The Mets also got Thomson, the pitcher from the Rockies, in exchange for Jay Payton. Texas got Todd Hollandsworth from the Rockies as well. Minor trades but I think the Mets helped themselves.
Not surprising at all, given all the uncertainty regarding the remainder of the season & the financial system in place for future seasons. I've never understood the "look at what the [insert team here] did, we've got to make a move to counter that" philosophy. You make the trades that are right for the team, not as reactions to things others do. I really didn't see any proposed trades that would have benefited the 'Stros that much.
I think there is a strong possibility that we'll make a waiver deal. This gives us more time to see whether the labor mess is going to be resolved and if it will be resolved what that resolution will leave us with as far as an economic system.
A major website (which will remain nameless) said the 'Stros were still looking to add a middle reliever. Other than that I think it's going to be pretty quiet on the waiver wire for the Astros.
We'll see. I think that the Astros will try to add a decent CF if they can get one to clear waivers. I think the quest for a starter is dead though because any of the ones we'd want won't clear waivers.
