Thanks for the info. Pretty good tournament, with quite a few NBA players. Mind you, the Chinese team has five other players younger or the same age as Ming. Guys, don't expect Ming to carry the Chinese team in this tournament.
Looking at that photo image....hopefully Ming can bulk up in the upper body to where Bateer is. Chris
Wang ZhiZhi couldn't possibly be in that tournament. He's too busy avoiding kidnappers here in the States, I believe. What'll Wang do? Sung to the tune of "Respect": "Wang told you to leave him alone/ Chinese Army says 'come on home'/ Mark Cuban says 'take it eeeeaaasy/ 'Cause you're pushin' him way too strong/ Wang's sick and tired of...chai-chai-chain, your chain of rules/ One of these mornings/That Wang is gonna break/ But up until then/He's had all he can ta-ake...." Sorry, I digress: Go Yao! Woo hoo!
PRESS RELEASE http://www.efesworldcup.com/worldcu...9e557e582ad76decc2256c07006fb13a?OpenDocument Date: 07/31/2002 Subject: Turkey - China Game Report Both teams started with men to men defence. Turkish national team lead the match 7-2 in after two minutes with offencive rebounds and steals. China took the first time out 06:42 remaining in the first period after consecutive turnovers. Effective defence and out zone shoots resulted with a 14 – 7 Turkey lead. In last 01:40 China tried full court press, but Turkey did not allowed any score in last 30 seconds. First period ended with 19-12 Turkey lead. Although China planned to stop Turkey with half court men to men defence, Turkey reached 13 point lead after two consecutive 3 points: 25-12. Hu Weidong injured with Asim's elbow in a rebound tackle and left the court. The score was 31-16 in last 5 minutes of the second period. Turkey took the advantage of zone defence of China by moving the ball quickly, Haluk and Harun scored two 3 points and Turkey obtained the highest lead in the match: 37-16. However, Turkey could not found any solution to the China's half-court men to men defence. China melted the difference and cut the lead to 13 points. Half time score was 41-28 for Turkey. The scorers were Ýbrahim Kutluay for Turkey and Yao Ming for China with 9 points each. Start of the second half was very dissapointing for Turkey. They could not score any points from their 4 attempts while Yao Ming was the key player by scoring 4 points in China's 8-0 lead: 41-36. Turkey missed easy shoots, and penetrations. They only scored 2 points in 5 minutes in the third period: 43-41. China benefited defensive mistakes of Turkey and took the lead 02:21 to go: 49-50. The result of that period was 49-50. In the last period, both teams focused on defence. Turkey took the lead with Harun 08:14 remaining. Until 03:30 both teams had low field throw percentage: 62-59. China's men to men defense crashed by Ýbrahim who played with 4 fouls and Harun's 3 point shoots: 68-59. Turkey controlled the game and won the match: Ýbrahim Kutluay dominated the last period with his super 3 points.
Yao Ming: 15 points, 7/10 FG, 1/1 FT, 15 rebounds (or 19? who is the boxscore expert please check for me.), 3 ast, 5 turnover, 2 blocks. Hidayet Turkoglu (the NBA guy in the Kings): 7 points, 3/12 (?), 5 rb, 5 ast. Bateer (the NBA guy in Denver): 6 points, 2/8 (?), 5 rb, 3 turnover, 1 block
Here is the complete boxscore of this game. I know somebody will be very happy. http://www.turkbasket.com/anahaber.asp?id=22592
In Chinas case, it looks like there should be an "I" in team. Because anytime a team has a real high percentage shooter like Ming, the coach and his teamates must find ways to get him the ball more. thanks for the stats w&s.
Ming's stats is a little lower than I thought. But at least, he led the rebound and block in two teams, and his assist is pretty good in Chinese team (he has 3 assist out of the total of 9). Turkey has 13 of 3 points. The outside defence of Chinese team is so bad.
Yao Ming: 15pts, 70%Fg, 15rbd (or 19) 2 blks Mehmet Okur: 10 pts, 6 rbds (Okur had spectacular summer league and according to Chad Ford is the real deal and should start for Detroit next year) Hedo Turkoglu: 7pts, 3/12FG, 5rbds, 5asst Mirsad Turkan (an Euro star): 1pt, 0/10FG, 6 rbds
To me,Yao Ming had a very good game before he has any NBA experince and coaching. But Chinese national team was horrible! What were PGs doing? No assists, No score, No defense.......
redao: Three best Chinese players were not on the court today. Wang Zhi zhi is in USA; Liu Yudong, who was the MVP and the leading scorer of CBA in the 2001-2002 season stayed at China because of the injury; Hu weidong, the best guard of China, who was invited to attend a summer camp of a NBA team a few years ago, was injuried and substituted at the beginning of today's game without any point. So it is not too bad for China to lose only 13 points to the home team at 3:00 am Beijing time.
Quote (Redao): To me,Yao Ming had a very good game before he has any NBA experince and coaching. Yes. Also Ming maybe unintentionally put only 65-75% of efforts into these games, due to concerns of injuries before even getting an NBA contract and setting foot on NBA court. It's not about his character, it's human nature. Considering this, I think this game showed his enormous talent.
Yeah. Remember, Turkey is not a bad team. They have at least two NBA-caliber players. 70% shooting, 15 r, 3a, 2blk. If this doesn't show talent, I don't know what does.
The funny thing is the Chinese team has only two guards (both point and shooting) in their line up. Now that they lost one of the two in the first quarter, they will be down to one guard for the rest of the game and probably for the rest of the tournament. So, how can Yao Ming get the ball. They might as well play Yao Ming at the guard position.
Fairly good performance from Ming. Okur is 6' 11" and is physically quite strong. If China had better guard play Yao might have gotten more opportunities to score. I wonder how many 2 and 3 point shots he took, since he only took one free throw which he made.
