That's the biggest part I'm worried about is his injury and how it may have affected him. From what I've seen before though he's a slippery player. Moves well w/o the ball and comes off screens very well. Great shooter. Not a physical defender but not a liability either. Demands attention from the defense even if he doesn't have the ball. Will fit well into the system since he's played in it before. I guess I'm still part of the group that still believes T-mac has something left in the tank, even if he's at 60% of himself he can still facilitate. I love the talent, but I hate the attitude. ON paper t-mac + landry seems to be a lot for Martin but since we haven't used t-mac then I guess he is just a contract and nothing else. I just wish we could have seen him self destruct before writing him off. Obviously his talent is of zero value to the Kings if we had to give up Landry to get this trade done. I can see the good in this trade but the initial shock of losing Landry is a tough pill to swallow so right now I'm not liking it. I hope I'm wrong about it though.
Because...last night, randomly, I was full of regret on why I passed up Kevin Martin in my fantasy draft 3 years ago. The person right before me on the clock drafted Martin when I mentioned him. I ended up coming in second that year. It all came down to Martin. I'm not joking. I haven't thought of it since then. I watched him play that year, I watched his stats. THIS GUY IS EFFICIENT AT SCORING. I can't believe Morey finally landed this guy. Too bad the cost was Landry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rgN0BLl5h0&feature=fvst let's hope scola can pick up the slack..and martin will do his thing in the perimeter..if he gets back to his old self he can go lights out..he has great shooting form..he's only 27 and hopefully his injuries are behind him. I know martin will do well..i just hope he's a better fit than landry who basically carried the rockets offense
I agree with most of the thread, but no, he can't post up, even at 6'7".... The guy's efficient scoring the basketball. He gets a lot of contact and is not afraid to take it to the basket. He also gets a CRAZY amount of fouls from pump fakes, which adds to his reputation as a great shooter.
GREAT Thread. Must rep Sir Charles Fan. I posted this in the trade thread, and it bears repeatign here. Before debating the trade further, please go to youtube to see some footage of Martin and judge with some information. Granted, highlights show people at their best, but it gives you some idea about his skill set. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZcENFKYAh4 This guy has size, good shot from distance, super quick release, handles, mid range pull up game, finishes around the basket, moves without the ball, including back cuts. Note how he flows in Adelman's system. Health is a legitimate concern. Talent is not. Not one bit.
yes injury history is a concern. but people who dislike this trade need to imagine kevin martin spotting up with yao down low. or kevin martin putting pressure on the defense to keep up with him and finding yao or an open rocket. dont forget about aaron brooks creating the same havoc for opposing defenses.
I havent seen him at all this year i dont think. But i remember Ron Artest saying that Kevin Martin was the best player on the Kings when Ron was still playing for the Kings to that one Sacramento radio Host (carmichael dave i think). I liked what i saw in previous years of Kevin Martin.
that's really funny. i thought the clutchfans consensus was that single players should get all the blame they can get for stuff like this. but now it's the gm's fault. too bad that petrie has a reputation for being one of the best gms in the nba for over decade...
and btw, allen iverson was a much better player than kevin martin ever will be. and that's coming from someone who thinks iverson is vastly overrated...
they went from having a team with one of the best records in the league to being in the lotto in 3 years. Yeah, he sounds like a great GM.
Evidently Tracy McGrady is still sitting in his mansion lurking on Clutch Fans! He went so far as to pose as Ron Artest and rap about himself thinking it would be funny! Aren't you glad that we are shipping his ass off!
...I have caught quite a few Kings games - mostly because I don't normally get a chance to sit down until later in the evening and the west coast games tend to be the only ones still going so I have seen a few Kings, GState, and Clips games(refuse to watch the Lakers if I don't have to). Martin is legit. I always thought he was going to have a hard time once defenses started adjusting to him but it seems to have never happened and his game seems to grow every year. He's one of those guys who keeps moving and is always dangerous both with and without the ball(he's good at cutting when the defense turns it's back). A tough assignment and one of those guys who could make our offense "go"...apparently the guy is a complete gym rat too (no memories of anyone ever saying that about T-Mac). I think ESPN's David Thorpe is his trainer and he talks quite a bit about Martin's work ethic in his chats. I also seem to recall him dismissing Martin's ankle problems as not a long term problem in one of the online chats he hosts on ESPN. I can't remember how he phrased it, but he gave a simple reason why he sat as many games as he did. I'm also sad to lose Landry(my favorite Rocket) but oddly I actually got a few replies to my comments from ESPN's Ric Bucher via twitter and he said that Landry's knees are really really bad and suggested Houston may be getting out ahead of a micro fracture surgery down the road. I also questioned why Sacramento needs Landry, Hawes, AND Thompson and he said his sources say Hawes is not in their long term plans which made me wish Houston had made a harder push to get Hawes included. ...overall I'm pretty pleased. Like I said earlier, Martin could make Adelman's offense "go". That motion heavy offense we all remember from classic Kings teams now has a much better chance of working in Houston with Martin a part of the lineup. I'm also excited to be able to trot out one of the highest basketball IQ teams in the league. Yao, Battier, Scola, and Martin are all guys who are very savvy. I hate to see Landry go, but with all the hype he is getting, I think there was a good chance he was going to be leaving for way more money this summer anyway and we wouldn't have much to show for it so I guess this is a way of getting something in return. Martin's contract is reasonable as long as he stays relatively healthy and certainly he is as good as anyone we would have had a chance to sign this offseason.
