To say that the "Morey Hype" has a negative effective on our trade negotiations is essentially to say that the hype has intimidated or worried other GMs (and I'd say this is not the case). Isn't it just a possible that people think he could be over-confident or just plain stupid? Often times, innovative people are considered nut-jobs until they have substantially proven otherwise. Perhaps it's possible that other GM's think they can take advantage of Morey's moneyball style by dealing him players they think he's overvaluing because of the way that he views their stats. I'm not saying anything bad about Morey, I just think it's a false assumption that being considered new-school or Moneyball "hyped" is a detriment.
Well, weren't those deals viewed mostly as failures by the other teams? I think that was certainly the majority view at the time in the case of the Gasol trade. I was talking more about Morey being viewed as unusually smart and innovative in his approach to his job and capable of seeing hidden value in players. While it may not be talked about a lot in the media, other GMs are certainly aware of these characterizations. I understand that they're largely true but my concern isn't so much about whether they're true or not but rather what impact, if any, they have on his ability to negotiate with other teams. Do you think it makes them hesitant to part with a player in a deal, thinking there may be something they're missing in that player? Or might some get scared that they'll look foolish down the road for giving up a gem?
What's Morey's supposed to do to avoid hype? Make stupid trades and give Dorsey a Kelvin Cato contract? That will reduce his "hype" but is that good for the team?
I'm thinking the hype is all ours, so yes to neutral. But, if there is a GM out there that is influenced by this BBS (our Morey hype), well by golly, that just makes me giddy and him a bit of a doofus. -
This thread isn't supposed to be about how people feel about Morey's abilities but rather how they feel the way he is viewed by others could potentially impact negotiations. I tried to make that clear. I think Morey is terrific and didn't intend to shed negative light on him in any way.
That's a good point. I thought about something to that effect. One way or the other, if he's as good as he appears to be, others will become aware of it.
I expected the thread to get 1 or 2 stars (even though I intended in no way to say anything negative about Morey) but I didn't expect the results to be so close. I figured neutral would run away with it. Maybe it still will.
I voted neutral. There will be times that Morey is seen as a shark, but usually by that point he will already have backed you into a corner. I would also guess that some GM's will see Morey as a big fish/white whale to add to their trophy case. In the end, most deals come down to a team's needs and the GM/owner's willingness to take on risk/salary. Morey's strategy to stockpile assets forces teams to consider Houston as a trading partner, regardless of how much they may fear the moneyballer.
Ok, I think I understand where you are going with this. Thanks for the explanation. IRT to your question, if I was a GM dealing with Morey, knowing his reputation as a shrewd businessperson, I would very suspicious of any trades involving such GM. It is like, "am I getting farked on this"? lol
One thing I appreciate is that he hasnt traded away any of our core guys for now. That would really piss a lot of people off.
Interesting point. Morey seems to always be a step or two ahead of everybody else. Even if there was possibly some hesitancy to deal with him, he'd probably think his way around it.
I think that's probably the crux of it. All of these guys (or most of them) are highly intelligent and capable individuals. The impact of any possible hype likely has zero effect on negotiations. I just thought it was an interesting topic for discussion.
I'm curious to hear more thoughts behind the "Positive" votes. Do those people feel that other GMs trust he'll be more reasonable in negotiations?
I think Simmons had something to say about this around the draft. Morey's reputation isn't relegated to the BBS.
Ahh... "reputation"... that's the word I was looking for. Better than "hype." I guess it's too late to change the title. I already tried once. A better title would possibly be, "The Effect of Morey's Reputation on Trade Negotiations."
I don't know if a mod has time to deal with it but if possible, could one of you please change the thread title to: The Effect of Morey's Reputation on Trade Negotiations I think the current title has a negative connotation.
Personally I think the Hype is only generated by our fans.. No one outside Houston and Boston truly understands or gets what Morey does.. When they finally get hip to his wizardry It will have to be a negative.. right.. He has picked and traded for what people said was nothing only to have them pan out as good players.. There will come a time when Morey will want a player and the other GM will second guess why he wants that player instead of pulling the trigger.
I voted negative. I think that when GMs negotiate with Morey, they probably become very hesitant, hoping they aren't getting the less of the deal... And whichever players Morey requests, the other GM probably takes a few extra looks at the player to understand why Morey wants him... Daryl is obviously known for having an eye for talent.
