The New York Post is a terrible magazine. I'd treat it with as much respect as hoopshype.

I believe Bima (the resident capologist) made it sound like even if we took on Jefferies we would still have the ability to resign Lowry and Scola and use the MLE on a free agent.

But it seems as if the Knicks have bigger plans in aquiring Tracy instead of using him as 30 game rental.

Also, working the trade through trade machine it does not not seem to work from a salary match standpoint. To get it to work, with NYK getting TMac, Dorsey, and Cook, we would have to probably take Harrington over Hughes and add in Cuttino's expiring. Thus, the trade looks like:

    NYK (incoming Salary 27.2ish million)
    TMac
    Dorsey
    Cook

    Rox (incoming Salary 28.4ish million)
    Hill
    Jeffries
    Harrington
    Mobley

However, I think another goal of Morey's is to get under the luxury tax threshold this year, meaning we need to send out about 2-3 million more than we take back. NY has plenty of expiring guys who could be swapped in and out for the Harrington / Mobley combo I had above and who in combination can get us under the tax. More complicated is trying to manufacture that trade without NYK trading someone they actually play -- so while we could slot in Darko pretty easily someone like Duhon may or may not be.

True, but if they can entice another team to take Jeffries + a pick then they can call the Rockets bluff on the organization not buying McGrady's contract out. This way they get rid of Jeffries, keep their draft position for 2011, keep Hill, and possibly have the opportunity to sign McGrady to a small contract post-buy out.

Actually taking Harrington, Hill, and Jeffries for Tmac and Dorsey does work. If you throw in Cook then you have to take out Harrington and and Hughes. No need to add Mobely.

The New York Knicks are so desperate to have the most possible cap room this summer to go after two top-flight free agents that they are willing to trade rookie Jordan Hill and future draft picks to get it done.

The Knicks are getting close to a deal with Houston that would bring Tracy McGrady and his $22 million expiring contract to New York. The Knicks are willing to give up Hill and future picks to entice the Rockets to include Jared Jeffries in the deal. Jeffries will make $6.9 million in 2010-11.

"We've made progress," a source involved in the talks told the New York Post yesterday.

    This is from today.

It's funny how everyone assumes the Rockets will buy McGrady out. Personally, I'd be surprised if it happened. Why should they do him any favors? There were articles/snippets from a while back indicating that Houston would NOT buy him out, too.

I'm sure this is all giving Walsh pause and why trade talks continue; they wouldn't continue at all if Walsh was convinced Houston was going to do a buy-out of McGrady.

    mollamar,

BimaThug explained Jeffries' impact on our salary cap situation brilliantly. Unfortunately his contributions got a little lost in that "Rockets, Knicks may be closing in on a deal" monster thread.

...but I dug it out for ya...it's on page 23, don't know how you could have missed it ;)

I think this sums it up perfectly and shows why it would be a great, great deal for the Rockets. I think it's clear that we prefer (a) getting Jordan Hill PLUS one first-round pick PLUS the right to swap picks PLUS having the possibility to spend the MLE to (b) just having $7-8M cap space, right?

even if a buyout was going to happen (which i dont think it will) walsh would be better served to trade with houston to dump jeffries contract and get further under the cap for the summer. it wouldnt cost him hill, another first round pick and a swap but it would have probably cost him just hill or a first round pick. i think morey and co put the word out that they will not buy mcgrady out at all if they dont trade him and i think them not playing mcgrady right now backs up their words

Because he would be doing the Rockets a big favor if he takes a significant paycut on the buyout. Signing McGrady after the Rockets buy him out isn't going to help NY at all. NY wants to get rid of Jeffries contract to be able to sign two max free agents and they won't be able to do that if they don't trade Jeffries and wait for McGrady to be bought out.

DM the GM has to gake the open approach that McG will NOT be bought out; and if no trade occurs then NO buy-out, or where's DM the GM's cred wiith other GMs?

We can talk about how boring all star weekend was.

As for this thread guys should be happy and jumping for joy If they are dening it. I'm sure there are other offers that's way better than what the knicks are giving up. Why not entertain the bulls offer if it was brought up. The bulls seem to really be the best option because they are offering Miller and Salmons. A center and a wingman we need

Exactly. The buyout and the potential Knicks trade are two different animals.

If nothing gets done, then it makes absolute sense to work on a buyout. You might caveat some teams he couldn't sign with, but otherwise, you might as well pay Tracy less if he's of absolute no longer value to you anymore. Hopefully doesn't get to that point.

The Knicks trade isn't so much about the Knicks getting McGrady. They seem to be higher on him as a player than anyone else, BUT it is about them moving Jeffries. There aren't apparently many (any?) teams that (1) have an expiring player they are willing to trade at (2) a salary amount that works in a trade for Jeffries so that (3) they can get a future first round pick, all while (4) taking on Jeffries final year of $7+ million in salary.

The Rockets seem to be somewhat willing to do that....so the Knicks have to entertain that potential.
