While I'd love to agree with you (would make me feel better for getting nothing out him if he's not traded), I think Les would be inclined to buy him out for the right price. How much is he willing to spend to save face? Really?? You don't think that he would do a deal if it could save him, say, $3 million this year? Or $5 million? Honestly?
You can even add NewsDay into this as well as their Knicks beat writer Alan Hahn also confirmed the original story to sorts: Source: http://twitter.com/alanhahn/status/9169720212
There is always going to be hesitatation when you're tradeing 3 first round picks and a second for used, damaged goods. I'm sure Walsh would prefer getting Tmac for the vet min and trade Jeffries somewhere else. I would think that this trade doesn't happen until the last minute but I think Walsh knows that Jeffries has to be moved and the Rox are a buyer.
so your saying that the daily news is reporting there has been a "communication breakdown" and that the trade is on the "stairway to heaven." but the post is reporting that the knicks draft picks will be "ten years gone" even though tmac's game is "over the hill and far away"
see, this is what it has come to. because of the direction the rockets have gone rockets fans are holding their breath about a crappy trade that has maybe a 50 - 50 chance of going down. but even that is more wishful thinking than anything. other teams know the bad situation the rockets have maneuvered themselves into and they also know that the chances that mcgrady wouldn't be released if he's not traded are very slim. once the deadline passes and mcgrady's still a rocket the situation changes again. given that mcgrady's value will be below zero by then les alexander will start to think about saving money. morey and adelman will get nightmares about mcgrady going public with his situation and becoming a real distraction to a team fighting for the last playoff spot. and the rockets organization will have to wonder if banishing a player and then denying him a buyout would be a move that fits the image of an overall very classy organization. if i was walsh and it was only about getting mcgrady i'd definitely wait until he's released because chances are he will be.
Your not Walsh. He's trying to clear as much cap space as possible to be a big player in free agency this summer. Waiting for Tracy to be released does not help them at all.
You're not thinking this through. So, a few people in or near the Knicks' organization are giving Walsh some bad advice, wearing red devil suit, holding a pitchfork, sitting on one shoulder: "Let McGrady get bought out! Yeah! That's it!" And on Walsh's other shoulder, the little angel appears: "You know no one's going to take Jeffries' contract, you could have traded him a year ago for Kenny Thomas..." If Walsh fails to move Jeffries, he could lose out not only on an outside free agent but on his own David Lee.
T-mac won't get bought out and even If he did they would have lost salary space because of Jeffries on the roster. Just accept that your going to get abused by Morey and go try and sign 2 max players.
exactly. he would have to choose to go after lebron or keep lee... and will probably strike out with everyone. as i said in my video, no max player will sign there to play by themselves. either walsh moves jeffries or endures building the team from scratch... and i mean like they only have 4 players on the roster next year kind of scratch. not fun.
Sure, but it isn't all about getting McGrady for them. They desperately want to get rid of Jeffries because this is the only way to create enough cap-room to re-sign Lee AND sign a big-time free agent next summer.
Good. I really wouldn't want the crappy players NY is offering. NY will be fine anyway, they'll find a way to clear up space, they'll sign a major free agent, and they will get Mcgrady when he becomes a FA.
i would love to screw the knicks out of their picks, but i could care less if we just sit on tmac's deal.
Well, since from Walsh's perspective, it's not about only getting McGrady, your point is invalid. They also have an interest in sending Jeffries out for their 2010 shot (I mean, for Christ's sake, have you paid zero attention to the whole "NY CLEARS CAP SPACE FOR LEBRON that's been broadcast for the last two years?), and we're willing to do it, which few teams seem to be interested in. Needless to say, we'll demand a bit in exchange for taking Jeffries, and those picks would be fair compensation.
It is possible another trade steps in at the last moment to take Jeffries off their hands. You are right, it is in the Knicks interests to wait it out until the end.
Poor New York just drove up the price of T-mac and showing the league we'll take back salary but only for draft picks.
That's the only thing I see that could screw this deal up. Maybe since details got out on the McGrady deal other teams are calling and offering to take Jeffries for only the 2012 first round pick.
To be clear, we also have some free agent dreams for next season. Those are to either (a) resign our free agents and or (b) bring another major contributor. The problem with a New York deal is whomever get stuck with Jeffries lose out on their ability to sign a contributor / keep their own FA's. So unless we believe that we will find a major contributor through the draft using New York's picks, then doing this deal makes us worse not better. The obvious rebuttal is that Morey has been great at finding value through the draft, but I think our window with Yao is closing and I'm not sure we have time to wait the season or two it took someone like Landry and Brooks to become starter material.
