There are three reasons why I don't want Emmitt Smith to break the rushing record. 1. He's a Dallas Cowboy. 2. It knocks my favorite running back down a notch(Eric Dickerson) 3. My grandfathers favorite RB was Walter Payton, and I think he might turn over in his grave if it happens. (R.I.P. Gramps, the Bears will be back) Go Texans!!
Yeah, it pisses me off that he is going to. It's not breaking a record when you hang around pathetically just to do so. I wish someone would take him out in the pre-season and he'll retire.
since when did rushing for 1000 yards in your 12th year in the league constitute hanging around pathetically? fyi: walter payton, the deity whose record you're so worried about, "pathetically" rushed for 600-something yards in his final season. granted, barry sanders was a more entertaining runner, and he would've broken payton's record had he kept playing. but he didn't. get over it. he quit. that was his choice. and if you're going to b**** about a runner who should have the record if he'd only kept going, b**** about jim brown. cowboy-haters are pathetic. you don't want to like the cowboys? okay. that's your right. but to deny greatness when it is apparent is just sad and, more importantly, unsportsmanlike. give emmitt his due. is hank aaron pathetic? he got the record by being consistent for a very, very long time. that's what emmitt has done. anyway, when it's all said and done, he'll have the record, and you'll have. . . you'll have. . . well, I guess you'll have james allen. good luck!
Seriously, chievious, I don't think anyone in this thread is not "giving him his due." No one has stated that Emmitt is a ****ty RB or anything along those lines. The general sentiment I see here is that Emmitt will eventually hold the career rushing record, and many don't think he is the best RB in history, so that they wish others had it. That's a sentiment I happen to agree with. How nice to be a very good RB when 4 of 5 Probowl blockers are opening up holes big enough to drive trucks through. Just thought I would jump in here...or maybe I am just being a "pathetic" cowboy hater.
can you name the last year that the cowboys had 4 of 5 pro bowl linemen? can you name the last year they had more than 1 pro bowl lineman? in case you've missed it, the cowboys haven't been very good the last few years. if emmitt benefitted from being on very talented teams the first half of his career, it has been balanced out by him playing on sorry teams with sorry offensive coordinators the second half.
Okay, way to refute the one point I made that really didn't have much to do with my overall point. Fine, Emmitt didn't have a great deal more help blocking than other top RBs. Fine. But it changes nothing, in my mind. Barry Sanders was still better. And from what I have read and seen of a few other RBs, they were better as well. Saying that doesn't make you a Cowboy hater, and it certainly doesn't mean that you aren't giving Emmitt his due.
Intresting side note from today's Chronicle: Where do the Texans get most of their players? The state of Texas and the Chicago Bears are the biggest supplier of talent. There are 21 players on the roster who played high school football in Texas and 14 who played college ball here. Texas A&M leads the way with six alums. There are more former Bears (5) than any other NFL team. Now if we could just get Brian Urlacher down here. Da Texans!
No question about it, Emmitt's a great RB and an upstanding individual (Cowboy?). It's just hard to see such a pristine record go to an individual who many do not see as the greatest of all timje. But just as most consider Babe Ruth to be better than Hank Aaron (HRs) and Michael Jordan greater than Kareem (Pts), in my opinion, there are a number of greater RBs than Emmitt including Jim Brown and Barry Sanders, who both ended their careers prematurely. Also, Sweetness played on a bad Bears team for many years with little talent around him, unlike Emmitt who's been on a stud team most of his career.
Great Post Minni. Cowboys will be back. Texans and Boys in the Superbowl in 3 years. Go Boys. Go Texans. Go Emmit.
If you were building an alltime team to play 1 game, who would you pick for RB? Would you pick Smith over Payton? Smith over Sanders? Smith over Brown? Smith over Dickerson? I wouldn't take him over any of these guys. He's been a great player on great teams for most of his career and has been a solid person to boot, but he isn't the greatest running back of all time. A lot of people like records like this to go to the greatest of all time, but they rarely do. Sadly, the league will push Smith's greatness so far down our throats next year that my tollerance will soon wear out and I will have to join the hating.
since when does 1 game determine greatness? if that were the case, we'd all be kissing corey dillon's ass and naming him the greatest of all time. if you were going to name an all-time team that was going to play for many seasons, you'd have a hard time explaining why you'd pick someone other than emmitt smith. so emmitt's not the greatest of all time? and how would one measure something like that? you might use rushing touchdowns. oh, wait, emmitt's got that record. or, you could use all-time rushing yards. but, doh, emmitt's going to have that one soon, too. I guess you could use all-time yards per carry. that one might allow you to name someone else greatest running back of all time. then you could be happy. it sucks when pesky, concrete facts say something other than what you want them to. my point is not that emmitt is the greatest running back of all-time. that's a silly barroom discussion with no right answer. my point is that emmitt deserves the record he's going to get this year barring unfortunate calamity. and the records he will have will say something about him that no one can say about barry, or payton, or brown, or dickerson. he will have done something that NONE of them will have done. period.
Yeah I just I don't want Emmitt to break the record in the same, but not as extreme way as I don't want Karla Malone to get the record...that b*stard...ughh
Fine Barry Sanders is better. But whose career would you personally rather have? Barry Sanders - 3rd all time on the rushing list and a quitter. Emmitt Smith - 1st on all time rushing list, and 3 time Superbowl Champion. Such a hard choice right? Hate the Cowboys all you want. I could care less. But give Emmitt his due. He is not a jailbird or crack head like some of the other guys on the Cowboys. He is a top 3 to 5 running back of all time and you gotta respect that. He is not an a-hole in real life either. Hate him, but dont let your hatred overshadow his greatness. I hate Karl Malone and Brett Favre more then anyone in this world, but I'm not going to be dumb enough to say that they suck or how they dont deserve their records.
