I thought Austin Croshere was the Rockets' main target this offseason, but Marques Johnson just said on Fox Sports Report or whatever the show's called that Croshere has signed a contract extension with the Pacers. Did anyone know about this?

Well Marques Johnson just reported a Popeye, then.

Croshere is a FA. Extensions are not allowed on rookie scale contracts after Oct 31st (or something) of their final year. After that, the must become FAs.

This all points back to no new contracts may be signed until Aug 1st and why Popeye's exile is not needed. Many people report stuff like this.

DaFranchise is indeed speaking to the Devil. Already has one poster excited.

That's true, it is illegal, but I know what I heard. Hmmm, I wonder how this is, you'd think Marques Johnson wouldn't make a mistake like that. Saying it on a fan-run BBS is one thing, but on national TV, damn. Only thing I can think of is he did sign before then but Indy and Croshere just didn't report it or something. Other than that the Pacers and Marques just made a big boo-boo.

And the Devil jokes are getting a little old.

all FA signings are a No-No before Aug 1st. Verbal agreements are fine, then they count against the cap, but all signings are a No-No.

Devil jokes aren't nearly as old as endless speculation threads (not to say this is one), just treat it as my chosen, stupid signature for the Summer. btw: do you have a link to this Fox report?

    Rockets03,
I don't think anyone is getting carried away with the talent of Austin Croshere. Sure, it took him a couple of years to get his feet wet and to get some minutes, but he has played consistently at a high level this year. He plays with so much energy and so much confidence. Plus, his game is a lot more well rounded than many give him credit for. He has range, he can face up or play back to the basket...he has decent handles, and is a good passer. He definitely does not shy away from taking it strong to the basket. I like this kid....sign him up!

Either Johnson said that Croshere was going to or Johnson was just flat out wrong.

    Croshere is a FA.

I still say Heypartner is the Devil. He wants to kill all the fun speculation off the board. He is a high ranking member of ... the speculation police.

I heard this same thing on Fox Sports News last night. It was in response to one of the viewer e-mails where they asked something like "How much do you think Austin Croshere will get paid on the open market?" Johnson's response was something like "He has already signed an extension." I was thinking what?!?!?!?!?! I had never heard of this, I think Marques just has his facts mixed up.

Fox Sports reports things like this all the time. I haven't heard one that is true yet.

    btw:

The Oct 31st deadline on rookie scale extensions is correct. Now we know why it appeared that we rushed to sign Cato's extension.

Can you imagine what he'd have commanded on the speculative exchanges if he didn't sign early and had played with heart this year.

Austin does have a contract extension, but it is a player option that is for around the minumum for next year. Austin's agent was trying to work out an extension last off season for him and nothing could be agreed to, so out of good faith D. Walsh offered the minumum extension more as an insurance policy for Croshere than anything. By insurance, I mean if he blew his knee out he would still have some income beyond this year. The thing everyone has to remember is that Austin had almost zero value before this year. Many questioned if he could play at this level because of his horrible inability to defend either forward position. With this all said, Austin is an exeptional young talent who is a free agent next year.

    thx Speedy.

Both Patricia's salary page and the FAQ are vague on pre-CBA player options.

There are some complexities regarding player options pre CBA. So, I am not clear on this. For instance, player options simply don't exist anymore with rookie-scale contracts, so much of what is in the new CBA doesn't cover Croshere. I will say one thing with tempered confidence:

Options must be exercised by the July 1 that precedes the option year.

I don't think he's opting for the minimum, so effectively, as you say, he only has an insurance policy that he doesn't really want to use.

I WANT AUSTIN CROSHERE ON MY ROCKETS !!

He is awesome, plays with fire and desire, and runs the floor well.

He has a post game, and is a smart player.

I really want him, more then any other FA this offseason.

    DaDakota,

I'm starting to feel the same way. I know I shouldn't judge him from the playoffs, but I can't help it. Put Kenny on the bench or trade him.

    Nike,

I wanted to make a big bad case about why Austin would fit in better then Duncan, but I kept laughing so hard, I couldn't get it out.

Ok...except for Duncan and Hill, I wan Croshere.

    DaDakota

PS..If you forced me, I would take all 3.

I'll go out on a limb and say I'd rather have Croshere than any rookie in this draft with the possible exceptions of Swift and Martin, but even considering those 2, I may still take Croshere. Am I crazy? (Shut up Francis3 [IMG])

Yes you are crazy, at least if you think Croshere is better for the Rox than Swift and Martin.
