Could or should the Astros pursue this trade idea?

I don't know anything about the intricacies of making trades in baseball, but I was just wondering about this idea & whether it would be feasible or not.

It's painfully obvious that we need a center fielder with some range & Ward isn't living up to his billing as an outfielder & appears to be better suited for the first base position. The problem is, that's Bagwell's position.

So, with that thought in mind, would it be possible, or practical, to pursue this trade?

Houston sends Ward/Redding to Cincinnati for Griffey.

Griffey's been hurt for the last two years, but was pretty solid in Seattle. Maybe his recent rash of injuries has something to do with Cincinnati's stadium and/or coaching staff, or it could be that he's 31 years old & time is catching up.

Ward could play 1st base for Cincinnati & provide some serious pop with the bat, while Redding is a promising young pitching prospect with major league experience.

Would you take the chance on Griffey & make the trade, or would Cincinnati even let us finish making the offer before hanging up? If not Griffey, then how about Cruz jr. or some other promising center fielder? Any thoughts?

The way Redding's played, would the Reds really take him on? I don't think they want any of Ward's defense, either...nor do they want to shake the team up while in a pennant chase.

It'd likely take multiple high-level prospects and a capable major league outfielder to ever pry Griffey away from Cincy, and even then I'm not sure they'd deal him away. He might even have a clause in his deal which limits where he can be traded to, limiting options for the Reds to make a deal.

on top of the points mfclark made, Griffey's salary is huge. Drayton has consistently stated that he has no plans to increase payroll.

Ward and Redding draw very low salaries.

If Ward ever does develop into a power monster, why would you want to trade him to a division rival?

Cinci wouldn't trade Griffey -- certainly not for Ward & Redding. The same reason we don't want those two (they suck) is the same reason they wouldn't. Plus, Ward's long-term value in this league really is as a DH, in my opinion.

Griffey could fetch more than that -- and had better, or the Cinci fans would be pissed. Essentially, we'd be trading away two prospects who couldn't even help a team that needs help (especially Redding in the pitching dept) for one of the best players of our era.

I think they already traded encarnacion to clear up the outfield situation. So they are probably done.

Griffey b****es too much. I would hate to see him wearing the mud and blood.

    Maybe eventually...but not these days.

A Reds fan held up a sign at a game:

    4 tickets $100
    4 hot dogs $20
    Ken Griffey, Jr. WORTHLESS.

This seems to be a commen sentiment amongst the Reds faithful these days. Their record is horrible when Griffey is in the lineup.
