    I just got my ATI HD 4850 in the mail, but I have no idea how to install it.

    I opened up the computer, took out the old video card, and popped in the new one. When I went to start the CP, it said I needed to connect the external power cord. What is that? My video card did not come with anything. Is this cord inside the computer? (And how do I connect it?)

    Uh oh. After reading all this, I am looking in my computer and all I see are 4-pin power connectors. My video card needs a 6-pin power cable. Am I screwed?

    Look inside the box the video card came in. It should come with a;

    "PCI-Express Adapter (Turns two standard Molex into one PCI-Express)".

    you'll need a new PSU, chances are your current PSU won't support the card and PC, check the power requirements, 4850 probably requires a 600 or higher PSU

    The official requirement is 450 watts, but I've ran them on my home computers with a 400 watt psu with no problems.

    The box didn't come with one, so I guess I will try and find one online. I'm just glad that I don't need anything more serious.

    Thanks guys...

    Really? That sucks...most of the video cards I've purchased came with one or two. I have a ton of them and could give you one for free.

    Would you? I just hit up a few stores and couldn't find one, so it looks like I am going to have to find one online.

    What stores sell internal computer parts? I would like to get one today, but I checked out Staples and Best Buy and I guess they don't sell that kind of stuff...

    One of the greatest BBS tech geek moments was when Fatty (I believe) once asked from which website to download a sound card because he didn't have audio. That was greatness.

    You've got it easy.

    I have two 9800 GTX's in SLI, each requiring two 6-pin connectors, so 4 in total. Fortunately, but 1000w PSU ("eco friendly") had just enough!

    I'm thoroughly disappointed in SLI though, but let's not get into that.

    I wouldn't waste my money on the cable converter if I were you. Best bet is to get a new PSU around 600watts. Seems to me if your PSU doesn't support a 6pin psu pretty much means it's some generic and low power psu that's going to give you problem when installing that new video card. Save yourself the headache and just get a new PSU for under $100.

    That'll work, but how many watts is your power supply? Fry's has the Antec Earthwatts 650w on sale right now for $59. http://www.frys-electronics-ads.com/ads/2010/02/05/46677/Antec-EarthWatts-650W-Power-Supply

    Open the case to your computer and look at the top. Look for a square box with a bunch of wires hanging out, it'll look like this...
    power supply link
