Tiananmen Square Massacre and Iranian post election protest similarities

There are inevitable similarities but there are key differences. While the Tianamen protests were about reform it was about the direction of reform since reform was going in the PRC, just not as fast and in the area of political freedom. The Iranian protests while have been primarily about political reform but Iran as a country is stagnating also in terms of economic and cultural reforms also and frustration over those have also been driving the dissatisfection of the generation protesting.

Tiananmen's affect on the PRC consciousness was short lived as the regime was able to deliver on materialistic improvement while at the sametime successfully stoking nationalist feelings among the generation that protested at Tiananmen. At the moment it doesn't appear like the Iranian regime is delivering on economic or cultural improvements and just retrenching ideologically so the affect of the current Iranian protests movement might be very different than Tiananmen.
