I went out there before my trip and I must say I am in LOVE with California. Now I know what the fuss is all about. Great weather, tons of energy; though the people seem more superficial. I love Austin, but I would consider a move out there. Anyone live or lived there? What'd you think? Any recommendations as to where a young guy (single) should live? I don't wawnt to live inside LA, maybe a surrounding burb. I was very impressed with the diversity (lots of Asians). Can anyone compare Orange County to LA county for me? Both are huge, but are there differences?

You tell me you're in love with me That you can't take your pretty eyes away from me It's not that I don't want to stay But everytime you come to close I move away I wanna believe in everything that you say Because it sounds so good But if you really want me, move it slow There's things about me you just have to know Sometimes I run Sometimes I hide sometimes I'm scared of you But all I really want is to hold you tight Treat you right, be with you day and night baby all I need is time I don't wanna be so shy, uh-uh Everytime I am alone I wonder why Hope that you will wait for me You see that, you're the only one for me I wanna believe in everything that you say Cause it sounds so good but if you really want me, move it slow There's things about me, you just have to know Sometimes I run Sometimes I hide Sometimes I'm scared of you But all I really want is to hold you tight Treat you right, be with you day and night All I really want is to hold you tight treat you right, be with you day and night Baby, all I need is time Just hang around and you'll see There's nowhere ill ever be If you love me, trust in me The way that I trust in you Oh, yeah Sometimes I run Sometimes I hide Sometimes I'm scared of you But all I really want is to hold you tight Treat you right, be with you day and night Sometimes I run Sometimes I hide Sometimes I'm scared of you But all I really want is to hold you tight treat you right, be with you day and night All I really want is to hold you tight Treat you right, be with you day and night baby, all I need is time
I went to Cali for the Summer Pro League games a couple of weeks ago and loved it. Weatherwise and entertainment wise, Texas is a relative hell-hole in comparison. I'd move there if I could find a job that paid similarly. The only thing I hate is the possibility of earthquakes. I live in Dallas now and get kinda annoyed at waking up to 80 degree weather, being awake in 100 degree weather, and going to sleep in 95 degree weather. In Long Beach, I was waking to 60-65 degree weather and the hottest it got was about 80-85 degrees in the afternoon. I also hit the San Diego area while I was there and the hills, beaches, etc. nearby are awesome. I didn't notice that the people were any more superficial than anywhere else from talking to them. Everybody in the Long Beach area seemed pretty cool and really nice. I did almost make it up to Compton by accident. Anyway, good luck and hope you finally get a job, you bum! And if you see moestavern19 up there, deck him for me. I tried hunting him down on my visit, but he hid well.
gr-8, once you get past the high cost of living, Cali is a badass place to live. I like Northern Cali alot better than LA. LA's a fun city to visit, but it's just too damn big. All those highways reminded me of Houston. But the nightlife is crazy fun in LA. If you get a job in Silicon Valley, then you should consider taking it. It is gorgeous down there. Austin doesn't really compare from an aesthetic standpoint. However, you have to factor in cost of living. Average joes have a hard time maintaining a moderate lifestyle down there. Not to mention the $6 beers. Ouch!
I guess where I live most consider the perfect weather. 150 miles north of LA, 10 miles off the ocean. "small town" of about 50,000 called Lompoc (pronounced Lom-poke). Its all and all considered nice place to live, Its very diverse with a large hispanic population. Weather is about 60 during the day 40 during the night in the winter, Never snows, You'll see mostly 72-78 June-October, 55 at night. No Earthquakes, We did get the El Nino thing a few years back, but no major flooding accured. Has a nice couple of High Schools, producing college football and NFL player Nap Kaufman, and NBA guard Eric Strickland. p*rnography is perfectly legal when you reach the age of 18. we have a 4 screen movie theater and a 2 screen movie theater. A bowling Alley, and a Starbucks, Burger King. McDonalds, Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, Denny's, Pizza Hut, Dominos. A Wal-Mart with a McDonalds in it. Then of course take into fact the Beach here is closed March-September (summer in case you didn't notice) because the Snowy Plover, an endangered bird, nests along the beach (Also nests in small area know as the Pacific Coast Line, Washington-Baja Mexico). So in the Summer time, You can drive out to the beach and enjoy a half mile long strip of coast line Friday night-Monday Morning. Of course the idiot Tourists go whenever they want and get a citation from the local Air Force Base Patrol. 25 citations and the Beach gets closed until October 1st (I think we are at 18 all ready). Then the Tiger Salamander cause 40 farmers to sell their land because it was becoming "endangered", Turns out as soon as Land was cleared, It was discovered the Salamanders were actually cannibals and eat each other. Then of course you can have a nice place to live for about 350,000 dollars. or If you prefer a 1 bedroom apartment, middle class, 800 bucks a month doesn't break anyone does it? The Local Gangs are not bad at all, More talk than anything. We only have about 2-3 murders a year. Drugs are a small problem, Weed is very easy to get as any Junior Higher will to you. Then of course our wonderful District Supervisor, who fired a public servant for reciting the Pledge of Allegience. Some of you C-Span watchers might now about this. So If you are between the ages of 20-30, Have a well paying Job, enjoy smoking mar1juana and Protesting Conservative Measures and have a vast fear of natural soil. Welcome to Heaven.
gr8-1, I lived there for over ten years: Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Woodland Hills, Long Beach, Hermosa Beach. Great if you're young and have a good job. You'll get tired of the social norms...me first, no southern manners and hospitality, etc. We're glad to be back home in Texas (Austin), but we have a little-one now. For an awesome experience, live on (or VERY close to) the Beach in Newport Beach or Manhattan Beach. Unbeatable. If you want more info, just e-mail me.
Orange County is newer than LA, so their cost of living is a little higher. If you want more info, just hit me up with an email with questions. (I live in LA if you didn't know).
I live on Balboa Island (Newport Beach). This is literally heaven on earth. The weather is incredible, there is tons to do, great schools (mine are homeschooled though), plenty of jobs, et. al. The drawbacks: The cost of living. Average rents in OC are around 1500+ for a two bedroom. The crowds. I am fortunate that my office in Irvine is just a few minutes away. Many aren't so fortunate. In my opinion, if you get past these two things, this is a really cool place to live. Also gr8-1, you mentioned Asians. Irvine has a large Asian community (UC Irvine does a lot of international recruiting.) Other OC communites (Garden Grove for example) are predominately Asian.
We took this trip to Garden Grove, smelled like Lou-Dog inside the van, oh yeah. This ain't no funky raggae party, two dollars at the door.
I live in NorCal. If you are in the high-tech industry, Silicon Valley is the place to be. You can live about half an hour away for a reasonable amount. The jobs pay very well. The problem is, no one is hiring right now. Probably a year or so for the industry to turn around. San Jose is about an hour from the Santa Cruz area, pretty good beaches, and an hour from Frisco, an nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. Pretty much every kind of entertainment exists in California. Our number one problem is cost of living. Earthquakes are nothing to worry about. Most you can't even feel. The big ones are few and far between, and the chances of injury are reasonably low. I have lived here all of my life, and I can tell you that we certainly do not have hospitality of any kind. I know none of my neighbors. My mom's neighbors had my car towed. People are not particularly friendly out here, but no one should hassle you or anything.
I'm living in Northern California too, but since I can't drive and I haven't been too many places, I guess I can't comment too much. The weather's nice, though.
