HEB store brand is actually pretty darn good (and cheap). But usually I'm too lazy/pressed for time, so I just go with ol' Starbucks.

In the San Francisco area, I like beans from Phillz. When I can't get that, I get beans from Peet's Coffee.

By the way, there's a Peet's in the Houston Airport now (Bush that is.) Maybe they're moving into Houston. Beats Starbucks every which way.

Well I bought a pound of the Indian Premier and it was quality but the place gave me some quite stale beans. When I asked for it they produced it instantly meaning it was sitting on the shelf. Smelling it told me it had not been recently roasted, not within a week anyways. I guess if you mail order they make sure it is fresh, but mine was not as a walk in. The bean is good but if this is the level of freshness it cannot top the 7 per pound of Lola Savannah french roast.

i think next time I will ask when it was roasted. possibly get some fresh stuff.

I'm Vietnamese, can't help it, 99% of Vietnamese people have this in their house.

My favorites are usually ones I have to order like Pecan Praline, Chocolate Almond, Butter Toffee and of course Breakfast Black Tea.

Being on a budget, I buy a can of Folgers Hazelnut and a can of their Gourmet Dark Roast or whatever it is. I then mix the two together in a larger can.

    Good stuff.

I think Maxwell House is better than Folgers.

Funny your choice of words. Their claim to fame is nothing is ever more than 7 days old. They roast all their own beans at an offsite warehouse they own over by the dome. They bring it over and put it on the shelf. They don't roast it to order so I'm not sure what you were expecting. Would you have been happier if it took them 5 minutes to bring it to you? It's possible you got it on day 7 (which is still far fresher than anything you'd get at Starbucks or probably even Katz Coffee ...which is also generally very good, btw).

Speaking of Katz Coffee and freshness, you can buy it at various stores like Central Market ...but not sure about freshness. There are three 'Farmer's Markets' around town where the owner sets up shop. That stuff is always fresh and generally very good despite the dumb names.
