Well, Vince's comments make me feel a little more kindly toward the guy. Vince still needs to understand that he's his team's go-to guy, gotta sack up. But damned if he do, damned if he don't. He's mean at the Olympics(?), the world reviles him. He's soft in the NBA, the NBA chastises him. He's gotta get nasty in the NBA, no more nice guy. But I'm still glad he said cool things about Ming, even though to the press you gotta be cool.
Vince looks like he's listening intently, not wondering what the hell Yao is saying. I sure wish the media here would get it straight... Yao speaks English! Maybe not as well as he'd like, but he speaks it. (or Vince should be up for an Academy Award, lol)
BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Vince Carter set Chinese fans into ovation with his flashing slams on Wednesday when he found minor challenge from a Chinese unknown. ¡¡¡¡The Toronto Raptors player, who was on an Asian trip, took on arole as a referee for a youth slam contest along with Chinese Yao Ming, the No.1 pick of this summer's NBA draft, at a stadium of the Chinese National Training Bureau. ¡¡¡¡He seemed feeling some challenge when he found Hu Guang, a 1.90-meter guard from Nanjing military team, could do almost all the slamming actions he did at NBA All-Star Slam contest, though not as flaring as he was. ¡¡¡¡"If you are good, I'll do it," Carter told Hu. When Hu successfully did another full-wing reversed dunk, Carter stepped down to the court, making three trademark slams to set fans into craze. ¡¡¡¡After that, Carter and Yao Ming selected a little kid each to play a 2-2 half court game. The future rivals intently avoided anycontest between them, letting their teammates to run and make baskets. ¡¡¡¡"This is my first time to China. I feel the hot atmosphere of 2008 Olympic Games. I will be here in 2008, I hope," Carter said. ¡¡¡¡He will leave for Hong Kong of China on Thursday morning beforeending up his Asian trip at Chinese Taipei.
Yao (in English): ....... Vince: (that sounds like English) Yao: ...... Vince (Listen more carefully): (Am I hearing what I think I'm hearing?) Yao: ... Vince: All right, all right! (I better leave this guy to Hakeem).
more Carter's talking about Yao Ming from xinhua news agency: ¡¡"Yao's gonna to find good time and bad time in NBA. He needs to keep his head above the water when he wants to do well," he added. ¡¡¡¡Carter recalled his first meeting with the Chinese giant center in an international match in Japan. "I said to myself (when I first saw him). He's tall. I'm going to dunk over him," Carter joked. ¡¡¡¡"But now I don't want to," he added. ¡¡¡¡Carter said Yao Ming was not strong enough for NBA match. ¡¡¡¡"He deserves what he gets ... the only thing I think for him is to get stronger. There are lots of guys in NBA strong enough to beat him."
MMMMMM Anyone else worried about Ming's lack of point production, Shaq will be quaking in his his boots if Ming can't score against NoD Vince and a 10 year old!!!
I'll bet Vince was scared. I mean, after all, I'd be willing to bet that Yao has had meals bigger than Vince Carter.
Maybe that's why Carter looked so apprehensive in windandsea's favorite photo. Ming speaks English, just not idiomatically; and I know Asians sometimes have a tough time with our conditional verb tense (would, could): Yao Ming: I've had meals bigger than you. I will eat you. Vince: (to himself) Oh sh!*....
Sorry to bring this back but I saw a small segment about this on ESPN News. The highlight they showed was of Vince and his kid doubling Yao's kid. (That's right they're both fathers.jk) Yao's kid passed to Yao who dunked it. Then they showed about 30 seconds of Vince's conference. He pretty much said what W&S said. He said "will he win ROY?Anything could happend." He also said that he doesn't know how Ming will do, it will depend on how he adjusts. Stuff like that. (I pretty much just repeated what W&S said.) Anyone else see this.
Actually, what Yao said to Vince was (In English): You don't have anything to do in the summer anyway, why not join us and play for China in the WCC? Ha ha ha, Yao weasle. (according to Chinese reporter Yang yi)
