Obama to announce high-speed rail plan post-speech

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A day after delivering a State of the Union address aimed at showing recession-weary Americans he understands their struggles, President Barack Obama intends to award $8 billion in stimulus funds to develop high-speed rail corridors and sell the program as a jobs creator.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden plan to announce grants for 13 major corridors during a town hall meeting in Tampa, Fla., Thursday, the president's first public appearance following his speech to the nation. It's an attempt by the White House to show that getting Americans back to work is the president's top priority and that he has a plan for how to do it.

Flat budget, limited goals may be in NASA's future

Far from getting the $3 billion more each year that experts suggest NASA needs for meaningful human spaceflight, President Barack Obama is expected to offer little new money to the space agency when his budget is released Monday.

Although there's no official word from the White House or NASA, space policy analysts and legislators say it's likely the space agency's budget will remain “flat” for the coming year, potentially leaving humans stuck in near-Earth orbit for the foreseeable future.

“If that happens NASA may have to get out of the human spaceflight business, because the money just isn't going to be there,” said Brett Silcox, an associate director with the National Space Society, a leading space advocacy group.

Since his election, President Obama has made just two decisions about NASA. Last May he appointed a blue-ribbon panel led by longtime space executive Norm Augustine to review U.S. human spaceflight, and he appointed former shuttle commander Charles Bolden Jr. the space agency's administrator.

Other than that, Obama has been mum, never articulating his vision for NASA.

Also see this as incredibly smart, and I have worked at JSC and my father spent a career at JSC.

We're light years behind our competition world-wide in the area of transportation infrastructure.

ShovelFace of course does not understand which center operates the Hubble Space Telescope or how the new generation of adaptive optics is rendering Hubble virtually useless anyway. But why even go there?

I know the board is more liberal in general -- I think that's true. But why is it that the most egregious thread-starters in D&D are from the extreme right? It's just interesting, in terms of psychological phenotypes. The middle and sane right hardly ever starts a single thread, even though threads from weslinder, refman, my alien twin brother from League City, etc, would be welcome.

No one's going to make IMAX 3d movies about transportation on Earth.

Yes, everyone with a pulse who has ever been within 500 miles of Texas or within 50 meters of a television knows where Mission Control is. Congratulations for having a pulse. Why don't you start a thread about that? Blame Obama for you having a pulse and the ability to type, and you might finally win over one or two people to disliking Obama.

I didn't realize the point of flying stuff into space was to make movies about it.
