France MPs' report backs Muslim face veil ban
A woman wears a full-length veil in Lyon, 25 January
The full-face covering has inflamed passions in France

A French parliamentary committee has recommended a partial ban on women wearing Islamic face veils.

The committee's near 200-page report has proposed a ban in hospitals, schools, government offices and on public transport.

It also recommends that anyone showing visible signs of "radical religious practice" should be refused residence cards and citizenship.

The interior ministry says just 1,900 women in France wear the full veils.

In its report, the committee said requiring women to cover their faces was against the French republican principles of secularism and equality.

"The wearing of the full veil is a challenge to our republic. This is unacceptable. We must condemn this excess," the report said.

The commission called on parliament to adopt a formal resolution stating that the face veil was "contrary to the values of the republic" and proclaiming that "all of France is saying 'no' to the full veil".

Wow. Go figure. The French are more radical than the Tea Party conservatives.

Am I the only one getting annoyed by the French?
They like their rights and yet are very arrogant in recognizing others' rights. Do they know freedom of speech not only applied to the French French, but Muslim French as well?

I think the French might as well cut to the chase and ban Islam from public life, they certainly have the votes to do so. Why expose yourself to the steady stream of negative PR?

Some countries ban certain religions from being practiced in public or acknowledged, the French want to ban all religions eventually from being practiced or visible in public. I guess you can have secularism as your state religion?

belive it or not I've talked to girls who wear the full scarfs and some of them really buy into the philosophies behind it and want to wear it and feel comfortable and obliged to themselves in their beliefs ot wear it not by force, you agree or not, its still their opinion and choice they have a right to have

I have heard from many Muslim women that they like it.

But the point is French gov't has no business in setting the dress code.

Sure. That's why we have first amendment here. That's individual rights which can't be deprived by majority's votes as long as they stay within the confines of Constitution. Let's get some basics straight here.
