Oh crap. :( RIP to all those lost. The most horrifying way to die IMO is plummeting thousands of feet, hopeless.

Your chances of dying on the way to the airport are probably higher.

Sad. RIP to all the passengers, I can't imagine the feeling of free falling to your death...knowing it's coming like that.

My Father is going to be in Lebanon in 2 weeks to snowboard, beautiful country. So sad for such a tragedy to happen right off the coast. :(

Was it out of Beirut airport? I've been there, although it was a long time ago. Pre-civil war. Does anyone know just what happened? All I've heard is that it disappeared from the radar 30 minutes after takeoff. Think how the families must feel. :(

I know how you feel, DD. I once went through a period, after flying a hell of a lot, where I started thinking my number might be up soon. I know, it makes no sense whatsoever, but I felt that way for a couple of years. Still flew, but kinda paranoid while doing it. Doesn't bother me much now.

We all knew Deckard was old, but I don't think we realized he was pre-Civil War old.

It's still way too early to tell. Supposedly, terrorism has been ruled out and it's suspected that it's a weather-related issue due to heavy storming in the area. Do I believe that? I'm not sure at the moment. African airliners have some of the worst safety ratings in the world so my gut instinct is to suspect that it's a mechanical defect or some sort of issue with improper/inadequate flight crew training.

The odds of a storm or lighting strike bringing down a jetliner are EXTREMELY remote. These planes are designed to withstand flurries of lighting strikes at a time and are tested as such.

P.S. Just read that they're rescued seven survivors

Edit: I guess this report of finding any survivors was bad info. It appears unlikely that anybody survived at this point. :(

One of the passengers is supposed to be the wife of the French ambassador.

God forbid you turn on a cell phone during the flight though.

Well, it shouldn't working at those type of altitudes anyway. :p

But yeah, I get what you're saying. Basically, there's two rules of thumb to follow when flying: (1) Do what they say and/or don't do anything alarming -and- (2) ALWAYS fasten your seatbelt

I think it's the sudden impact, head smashed into the overhead, and die instantly, not much agony.
