Police: Wife Runs Over Husband Over Infidelity
Victim's Daughter Watches Incident

NASSAU BAY, Texas -- A Houston-area woman was arrested early Thursday morning, accused of running over her husband and killing him after learning that he was cheating on her.

When asked about her husband's death, Clara Harris told News2Houston that, "It was an accident."

But Nassau Bay police said that they don't see it as an accident and said that Harris has been charged with first-degree murder.

The incident happened shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday at the Hilton Nasa Clear Lake, Nasa Road 1, in Nassau Bay.

Investigators said that Clara Harris confronted her husband, David Lynn Harris, in the hotel's lobby.

"She said that she was just distraught over the marital problems that they were evidently having," Nassau Bay Police Lt. Joe Cashiola said.

The argument moved to the hotel's parking lot, where Clara Harris got behind the wheel of her Mercedes and ran her husband down, authorities said.

"Officers arrived on the scene and found the victim had been struck multiple times with the car," Cashiola said. "Since then, we have brought the wife up here for questioning (and) during the interview she has admitted her involvement."

Police said that Clara Harris had long suspected her husband was cheating on her, and that her suspicions were allegedly confirmed by a private investigator.

"She has admitted hiring a private investigation firm to follow her husband around," Cashiola said. "So there was some type of history. We're still digging into that."

Investigators said that David Harris' 16-year-old daughter from a previous marriage was in the car with his wife and watched him die.

The couple had two other children, who are currently staying with their grandparents, authorities said.

Both Clara and David Harris were dentists and lived in the town of Friendswood.

David Harris' patients reacted with shock after showing up at his dental office in the Clear Lake area and learning about what happened.

Clara Harris was taken to the Harris County Jail and is being held on a $30,000 bond.

If this is your Dentist I would advise you to seek another one.

Yeah, that's some accident.

Here's the Chron story:

Dentist who ran over her husband charged with murder
By S.K. BARDWELL and RUTH RENDON
Copyright 2002 Houston Chronicle

A Friendswood dentist was charged with murder this morning, accused of killing her orthodontist husband by repeatedly running over him in the parking lot of an upscale Clear Lake hotel as his teen-age daughter struggled to get out of the car.

Dr. David Harris, a 44-year-old orthodontist with offices in Clear Lake, was rushed to St. John's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Dr. Clara Harris, a 44-year-old dentist with offices in Lake Jackson, was in the custody of Nassau Bay police this morning. Bond has been set at $30,000.

Nassau Bay police said the incident began just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, when the couple got into a heated argument in the lobby of the Nassau Bay Hilton along the shores of Clear Lake on NASA Road 1. One of the pair evidently was followed to the hotel by a private investigator hired by the other, police said.

The hotel management called police and asked the couple to leave, police said.

When the husband went out to his car in the parking lot, witnesses said his wife followed, got into her Mercedes, where her 16-year-old stepdaughter was waiting, and struck her husband as he was getting into his own car.

Police said witnesses told them that while the teenager tried to get out of the car, the woman circled around and ran over her husband twice more.

Police said that when they arrived, Clara Harris seemed calm, like she was in shock. She was questioned but did not explain her motives.

The couple, who lived in a half-million-dollar house in Friendswood's Polly Ranch Estates, have 3-year-old twin boys, who were at home with their nanny at the time.

I can't believe her bail was so low. She'll be driving around again in hours. Her daughter (and the other kids) will be scarred for life. What a sick, sick, b!tch. :(

Yep...in fact, she's going to be hard-pressed to use a "temporary-insanity" defense at all because of that.

No manslaughter case here (low bail aside), this woman will be tried for murder...

I don't know, though. I could see her getting manslaughter or murder but with a light sentence. I'm sure her defense will hinge on the shock of finding her husband at the hotel, apparently with another woman. She'll claim she snapped.

It's actually a similar case to the one in Fort Worth a couple of years ago where Jimmy Watkins went to his estranged wife's house and shot her. He then drove away only to come back a little later to shoot her five more times as she was on the phone to 911, that time killing her (in front of their child, according to news reports). A jury voted to give probation (after convicting him of murder), though the Judge in the case overruled them and gave Watkins 120 days in prison. The jury decided that Watkins' "sudden passion" was a large mitigating factor.

Could happen here, too.

I have to agree with Paige. Texas is more lenient on those who murder for infidelity than any other state. There are quite a few examples of murderers getting a slap on the wrist because they killed upon the sudden realization they were cuckolded. I think maybe Texan juries have an unusual empathy for the victims of infidelity.

However, I think she may not fully profit from this tendency because:

(1) She's a woman. This is just a guess, but I just can't see as much empathy extended to a woman as to a man in the case of infidelity. Maybe because there is a sexist perception that 'men do that sort of thing.' I don't know; maybe that's baseless, but that's my guess.

(2) It's unclear, but she may well have just then had proof positive that he was cheating on her. However, she suspected enough to hire a PI, which suggests some premeditation.

(3) She had the man's daughter in her car to watch and implicitly participate in his death. Very uncool. I think I'd feel completely different about the whole thing if it wasn't for this.

(4) Last and least: a car is a particularly barbaric murder weapon. Something cleaner like a gun or a knife would have been more acceptable.
