But they don't spend it. So they don't matter.

I'm pretty sure someone has a link to the article explaining in detail why younger viewers are so crucial. In addition to money in the bank, it also has to do with susceptibility to ads and difficulty of finding them.

Basically, old people watching TV all the time and you don't have to spend a premium paying for a commercial that they'll see. Plus they're not likely to buy something after seeing a few ads. 18-49 group is what advertisers have trouble finding, and they'll more likely to buy when they do see an add.

    Deal officially announced.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100121/ap_en_ot/us_tv_leno_o_brien

    [rquoter]
NEW YORK – NBC said Thursday it has reached a $45 million deal with Conan O'Brien for his exit from the "Tonight" show, allowing Jay Leno to return to the late-night program he hosted for 17 years.

Under the deal, which came seven months after O'Brien took the reins from Leno, O'Brien will get more than $33 million, NBC said. The rest will go to his staff in severance, the network said in an announcement on the "Today" show.

His final show will be Friday, and Leno will return to "Tonight" on March 1.

"In the end, Conan was appreciative of the steps NBC made to take care of his staff and crew, and decided to supplement the severance they were getting out of his own pocket," his manager, Gavin Polone, told The Wall Street Journal. "Now he just wants to get back on the air as quickly as possible."

O'Brien will be free to begin another TV job as soon as September, NBC said.

O'Brien landed the "Tonight" show after successfully hosting "Late Night," which airs an hour later, since 1993. But he quickly stumbled in the ratings race against his CBS rival, David Letterman.

Under Leno, the "Tonight" show was the ratings champ at 11:35 p.m. Eastern, but he proved an instant flop with his experiment in prime time.[/rquoter]

Instead of fighting for better severances for his staff, Conan should have fought for a shorter non-compete period since Conan will retain most if not all of his staff at his new show, no?

9 months is a loooong time and with the track record of late night shows on Fox, there is no guarantee Conan will be successful when/if he returns. I guess that's why he may have asked for better severances.

    http://www.tvweek.com/blogs/tvbizwire/2010/01/wow-an-article-back-in-2008-qu.php

An Article Back in 2008 Quoted a Latenight Source as Saying the Plan is to Keep Leno at NBC 'so if Conan fails on ‘The Tonight Show’ they will put Jay right back in there' James Hibberd's Live Feed at THR

We've always known that James Hibberd, our former TVWeek colleague, is one of the best reporters around, but the following reportage astounds even us!

Back in December, 2008, after Hibberd left us for The Hollywood Reporter, he wrote a piece quoting a "well placed late-night source" who explained that Leno was being kept at NBC in case Conan didn't pull numbers and the network could then replace O'Brien with Leno.

In a piece published on Dec. 9, 2008--on the occasion on NBC announcing Leno's move to 10 p.m.--Hibberd said he had spoken to the source in June, 2008, who had told Hibberd this:

"They [NBC] will try to keep Jay in the fold so if Conan fails on ‘The Tonight Show’ they will put Jay right back in there. Jeff Zucker will call Jay into his office with big wink and say, 'if you say it publicly I’ll deny it, but if Conan fails, I want you back.' That’s just the way NBC works. Back when Dave and Jay were fighting over 'The Tonight Show,’ they tried to see if they could do the same thing. That’s what they’re going to try and do here with Jay and Conan, only they are more likely to pull it off this time. One of the most important things to remember about NBC, is they had Coke with Carson. There was no Pepsi. They gave birth to Dave, then they suddenly had a cola war. They cannot bear the idea of Conan or Jay going across the street."

    Very impressive. Kudos, James.

Really, the only thing I hope to look forward to is Jay failing to recapture his ratings and NBC falling on their face yet again. That is my wish. I doubt it happens...but I would like it to happen. I like network TV controversy. It's fun! Letterman should do at least one joke a night ragging on NBC for the rest of this year.

It sounds like the turnaround time to get a new show going on Fox could take that long anyways. Fox still has a battle on their hands to convince all their affiliates to jump on board. And they'll probably have to take some time to build a new studio or renovate an existing set.

I wish Conan could guest host on SNL after his fiasco. Small chance of that happening though.

Ideally Fox (or whoever he goes to) could just buy the studio from NBC and dress it up differently ... it's not like Universal is exclusive to them. But I could see NBC not going for that both to spite Conan and use the studio for something else.

I don't think Jay is going to regain his ratings. By now, people have found other things to do with their time including flipping over to other shows and finding out those guys are much better than Jay. My mom is now a die-hard Letterman fan after having a preference for Jay the last 10 years.

As if NBC didn't have enough in its long and rich history of making terrible decisions, Adam Sandler reveals that NBC actually fired him and Chris Farley from SNL.

You fired Sandler and Farley? Really?

Btw, it seems that NBC edited out the Bugatti Veyron Mouse bit before uploading to Hulu. Obviously they couldn't afford the price tag of playing an original master recording of Satisfaction hundreds of thousands of times to internet viewers.

I can't wait to see what Conan does for his grand finale.

Pretty classy that Conan got $12 million in severance for his staff. Sounds like a good guy.
