He was good when he scored 13 pts in 33 sec. He was good when he posterized Bradley and carried the Rox to game 7 against dallas. He was good during the 22 winning streaks. He was MEDIOCRE EVER SINCE THE INJURY AND HE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER YEAR IN ANOTHER UNIFORM
He stunk until those final 33 seconds....he shot like 11 for 27 overall. Is that the game 7 where we lost by like 40 points? Yep, the team played well, Tracy played more within the team framework, too bad he could not keep it up. If by mediocre you mean...sucks at basketball, then yeah. DD
Honestly, i think part of the reason that his shooting percentage was so bad throughout the years with the rockets was because he had to take the last second shots in many occasions. The offense with JVG often get stagnant as it was too predictable which forced T-mac to take the last shot. He was pretty good at running the pick and roll with Yao. His court vision was probably one of the best in the league in his position. I just don't agree that he was that bad during his early years in the rox uniform.
i have seen nights where kobe shot the air out of the ball to get himself into a game. I havent seen a t-mac in a rockets uniform shoot the ball on a regular basis as he did in orlando. People have off nights, and they have good nights. You dont win all nba team awards for being consistently inefficient
First of all, what does potential have anything to do with it? We're discussing what a player did, not what he could've done. I don't care that he wasn't commited. I don't care that he was a primadonna who dominated the ball. I don't see why you have to harp on that. Chuck Hayes is for all intents and purposes was more consistent, more efficient, harder working, better person, played more to his potential, more everything than T-Mac... Except for that one small part where T-Mac was the much superior player. T-Mac in his heyday was not as efficient a shooter as Lebron or Kobe, but he was a better passer. Something that can be backed up by both JVG and Adelman. You can say about lack of drive all you want. But the Rockets would've easily gone past the 1st round multiple times in the East(ala Lebron). And Kobe's "drive" didn't get the Lakers any playoff wins when they're out-talented. Name a single Kobe-led team who won a playoff series when they're the underdog? Oh, and T-Mac's lack of efficiency can be directly attributed to the fact he takes all the end-of-shot clock shots in both Orlando and here. Or did you not watch the JVG years in which T-Mac has the freaking ball every single possession where Yao wasn't posting up? T-Mac had some ungodly usage rate during that time.
Look the stats up before you make a judgement. I am pretty sure it was 12-29. That is 41.3%. The team 29-82, 35%. Without T-Mac, the team shot 17-53, 32%. T-Mac improved the team's shooting percentage. Don't till me T-Mac stunk until the final 33 seconds. He played the best game of the whole team. Also, keep in mind that the Spurs were known for their defense.
And the Spurs were known for getting past the first round and winning titles. And T-mac fans are known for over hyping an underachiever. Keep in mind that in Rockets history, T-mac is nothing. He's not Calvin Murphy, He's not Moses Malone, He's certainly not Hakeem Olajuwon. Like Dream's toe nail has more heart and skill than T-mac.
LOL, seriously, Tinman, you need to chill. I was simply defending the fact that T-Mac didn't suck up until the last 33 seconds of that single game against the Spurs. When are you going to realize that defending T-Mac doesn't equal TOF.
The problem is that TMac DID play in the east as well and didn't have any more play off success there than he had in the west. It's not completely Tmac's fault of course, it is a team game. But Lebron and Iverson had terrible supporting casts that they lead to the finals. Tracy is still looking to lead a team to the 2nd round... There isn't another supposed "superstar" in the league who hasn't made it to the 2nd round by their 13th season, and it is very unlikely that Tmac leads a team to the 2nd round this year either. Most star players are getting critcized for not winning a ring by this point, not looking for their first play off series win. All that being said, it has been Tracy's constant injury problems that is the biggest reason I wanted him traded, much more so than anything he has said or done on or off the court. If he had not been so injury prone then I suspect he would still be playing for the Rockets today.
I say the exact same thing about Yao. If he doesn't bring so much Chinese fans and money, I doubt he'll still be on the roster.
That was one great regular season moment, some people, I'm guess who have never experience a great playoff series or championship tend to hold on to that thing like it was a caveman discovering fire. The fact that we needed a miracle barrage of 3 pointers to win says something about that game and the Spurs. It was a fluke we won and the Spurs still ended up doing better than us in the long run.
Even have to slam him for that game? Interesting. From ClutchFans Game Thread: Spurs @ Rockets 12/9/2004 (a first!) (I followed with this post, which I still think is a good idea) ) Clutch commented at the beginning that the Spurs were 16-3 and had won as many games in a row as the Rockets had won all season. What a win! I can't believe you would drag up one of the greatest regular season moments in Rockets history to give yet another dig at McGrady. The guy is on his way out. Give it a ****ing rest, dude. Here's the thread link. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=87965&page=1&pp=20 OH, and before I forget, SHEESH!!!
Lol. you can't help but get caught up in amazing moments like that. Anyway, technically in those posts he's savoring the comeback...doesn't really reflect his thoughts on McGrady up to that point... Just saying.
Seems to me that his PER was pretty high. Can't remember in what thread, but someone posted a graph comparing his PER to Jordon, Kobe, Leborn, and a few others, and McGrady's PER was second only to Jordon until the back problems, and way above Kobe over the same period. I know PER is not the end all be all, but it is a more solid basis for evaluation than random opinions on this board. As for his Rocket days, he was much less efficient as a scorer, and I am fine with that critique, but to say he was garbage as many on this board do is just flat a re-writing of history. I can't wait for a trade to happen so that all the negativity on this board will subside. Hopefully whatever they get in return will be solid for the franchise and the future of our Rockets.
Not sure I call it a fluke as it was not one event, but multiple events in a short period of time. Pretty amazing in my mind, but you are right that it is one event and does not compare to winning a championship.
13 in 35 was an awesome moment as a basketball fan. In fact, it was probably the most amazing thing I've ever seen on the basketball court but it doesn't change the fact that McGrady wasn't a winner and never will be.
