Pickups often have either plastic or metal covers on them. With the pole pieces exposed, like they are on this guitar, you can adjust them a little higher and closer to the strings to get a hotter output signal. It's not a huge difference, and it's not a matter of better/worse. And yes, the covered ones that are parallel coils in a single housing are also humbuckers.

That really helps thanks, My D string never really sounds out and my G string sounds out too much but I have a special 2 Epiphone so I don't know whether its because the special 2s just suck.

That is why I really wanted a custom, this one especially. I never get enough tone, it just sounds to choppy.
